Excelsior College

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hello all!

I'm new here to the boards and I was curious to know if anyone here from Virginia is doing the Excelsior program? If so, what has been your experience? Also, are you doing the program directly through EC or through the college network?

Thanks!

Have a good night!

Just getting the info to start college network for lpn-rn bridge. I am going to compare them with community college that is local.:nurse:

I went through the Excelsior program nealry six years ago, and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. Went directly through EC... loved it. Gotta have the motivation and determination for self-study, self discipline, though. It's not easy, but worth every moment of sacrifice. I know quite a few VA. and NC nurses who went through EC.. you can, too ! :)

Yes I agree, the Excelsior nurses program IS wonderful ! I am now just beginning to study for my first nursing exam, Community Nursing, for the BSN. Received my Associates back in 2001 when it was still Regents.

It is by far one of the cheapest methods, you can test out with CLEP and Dantes for many of the exams/courses. I took my CPNE in Phoenix and it really wasn't that hard, you do have to know your stuff.

I'm in Virginia! :) I'm doing EC, without a publishing company like College Network -- why spend thousands extra? You can get College Network study guides on eBay anyway. :) But I think I said the same thing on the other forum -- I'm just getting caught up with the Virginia forum! LOL

I'm done with the exams, just waiting for my CPNE date. It's a great program. The CPNE wait is a bit long, but I'm using my time wisely to make sure I know my stuff when the time comes!

Yes I agree that there is no need to purchase additional "study materials" as long as you stick to the study guide from Excelsior, get the recommended textbooks, and study real hard you should do fine.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I am definitely on my way to pursuing Excelsior. I'm still working on reading their nursing catalog and processing it all! I can't wait to start and be finished! LOL!

Good luck to you all on your exams and the CPNE- I can't imagine the stress you must be feeling while waiting, but I'm sure you will do great!

Lunah, I think I read on another posting that you're from Winchester-is that right? I grew up in Martinsburg-my mom still lives there. Small world!

Thanks again everyone for your time! Have a good evening!!;)

Yup, I live in Winchester. :) I'm actually from Oregon, but I'm a military brat and grew up in Europe. But I'm in Virginia for now!

Hpw well I remember that feeling, VAmomma! Thumbing through the catalogue, and getting so nervously excited to start.. AND finish ! :D

Wish you all the best.

You CAN do this !!! :)

Can someone explain what this school is really about? I was confused after going to the website. Do you take pre-req's like math and A&P with this program? Is it difficult? Im a mother of three and cannot go to a traditional program as I cannot be anywhere before 8am due to kids going to school and not having family around to help. I need an alternative! Advice please.....

It's distance learning -- self-study. I think the most difficult thing about it is staying motivated, but I know once I really got rolling, I couldn't stop! :) Essentially, you study a subject (they provide an exam content guide that outlines what you should be studying) and you test out at a testing center, on a computer, when you feel you are prepared. You receive your grade immediately at the end of the exam.

You can take your pre-reqs with Excelsior, and they also accept CLEP tests for many subjects (except for English, I believe). It might be helpful for you to go to https://www.excelsior.edu/publications and download the following: "School of Nursing Catalog" and "How much will your Excelsior College Associate Degree in nursing cost?" Those might give you a better idea of how EC's program works. It's not easy, to be sure, but it is certainly a great alternative when scheduling doesn't allow traditional classroom time. :)

Also, there is a distance learning forum here at AllNurses: https://allnurses.com/forums/f125/ -- there are a lot of EC students there.

Do yourself a favor and get on over to the Distance Learning / Independent Study area under the "Students" tab. There are many answers to your questions right there!!!
