Excelsior College, About how much?

Hello...here's the thing with Excelsior Distance Learning...the cost will also depend on how many exams you pass or fail....you have to pay for the exams every time you take them...if you fail one...you get to pay the total amount to take it again. Same goes for the clinical end of it, if you don't pass it, get to pay the whole amount. If you want more of a cut and dry financial picture..traditional route would be best, they are a little more helpful in making sure you pass your studies and exams. good luck.

Trying to makee my final decision whether to go the distance route to RN or Traditional route. For those of you who graduated EC and had little or no college credit, about how much did it cost you in the end?

I think EC is a pretty good deal. Compare the cost of EC to your local nursing program and see what you come up with. Don't forget to include the cost for the cpne for EC. On the other hand don't forget to add things like gas, food, and uniforms for traditional school.

Although I am not an EC student or graduate, maybe someone else will respond to your post and give you more definitive answers.

What is hard about Excelsior is that they don't give you much to go on to figure costs. The first thing you need to figure is how many credits you currently have. The ECE tests available and their costs on on their website. Other lower credits can be garnered with Clep and Dantes tests, those are much cheaper than the ECE general education tests. So the first question is what do you already have. Once you know where you are there, then you have to look at all the costs of the nursing exams and CPNE's. Add those in. Now, a real clinker with Excelsior is the study materials. If you go for the study guide companies that advertise prep materials for their classes you are going to add on a great deal there. If you don't use them, the cost will drop dramatically.

There are yahoo groups of dedicated EC nursing students. Post your questions there. They can give you a very very good idea of what they use and how much it costs.

Finally, you need to know you are self-directed enough to do this. I didn't do the EC program, I went to a brick and mortar school. But I did look at completing a general BS with them and also have looked at the MSN. They are very very short on info until you matriculate. I don't like the fact you will hear "It will all become clear when you become a student with us". I want it clear before I spend the money to enroll.

I think there are probably many fine nurse graduates from EC. But I'm also sure they are very very strong people who took their education into their own hands. If you need even the slightess handholding, and I did because I'd never been in the medical field, then I would think about it long and hard.
