Excelsior ASN (LPN to RN) students in NoVa?

Published

I am starting the Excelsior ASN (I am an LPN getting RN) program. Wanted to see if there are any others out there in the Northern Virginia/DC area. Thought I might see if there is interest in forming a virtual study/support group. Reply or PM me. Thx & Good luck!

I moved your post to the EC forum to encourage responses. I assume you know that you'll have to jump through some extra hoops for Virginia licensure, right? I think there might be a couple of NoVA folks around. Best of luck!

I started going to Excelsior while living in Virginia (in 2008). I moved, Arizona, and graduated from EC in 2010, though. If I'm not mistaken they will not license you in VA until you have 500 clinical hours as an RN. This may have changed, but I figured I'd give you a heads up. Good luck!

Pretty close. :) For initial licensure, an EC grad would have to work as an RN with a provisional license (I guess like a preceptorship?) before NCLEX -- 250 hours for those who entered the program as LPNs, 400 hours for all others. To endorse a license in to Virginia, you need 960 hours of time as an RN.

It was my understanding that you did the 250 (or 400) "provisional" status hours after you passed the NCLEX. No? Maybe it can be either before or after. I will have to circle back with Excelsior for clarification. Thx.

I think you're right - in re-reading the EC state board requirements page, it sounds like you first get a provisional license after NCLEX, and get a full license after the hours. Either way, there are some hours to do.

Hi, I just sent my transcript and waiting for eval. I live in alexandria, va.

Welcome to allnurses! Just wanted to make sure you are aware of the extra requirements for EC grads from Virginia for licensure:

Excelsior College | State Board Requirements

I did the program in 2007-2008 before there were issues with EC, so I am not exactly sure how the provisional hours are done, and in which areas.

I live south of Stafford and currently enrolled in EC

Hello medicnurse 2971,

How do you like it so far? I know things have changed for Va students, meaning that we have to do so many hours at the end. Can you give me your experience so far with the program?
