Hi. I don't know Eureka but I do know Arcata, which is super close (appx 10 miles), super cute, and a college town. Remember that you don't have to live in Eureka!
It is very foggy, rainy, and cold up in that area but it is gorgeous with all the redwoods. Just like FullGlass said, Eureka is like any town: Good and bad areas. You can get a better idea after you visit and talk to more people. Good luck!

A friend of mine lived in the Arcata/Ferndale area and loved it. He is an artist and there is a large arts community there. He was really bummed when he had to move away for work reasons.

Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone is currently living in Eureka, CA or has had previous experience living there or doing a gig. I have read bad things about the place and would like hear opinions of someone who actually has lived there. I am currently being flown over there to meet with a nephrologist for a possible job. This will be my first job, I have been in nephrology setting as an RN and would love to stick with nephrology. The doctor is very nice over the phone and is willing to train (he is the only nephrologist in the area). There is no official offer yet. All trip expenses will be reimbursed. Thanks in advance
