Entrance essay for FNP school

Hi everyone,

I have decided to go ahead and apply for FNP school. However I cannot seem to get my thoughts together on what to write for my entrance essay, The 3 questions they ask include describing how your work experience have prepared you for the program, how completing the program will help meet professional goals, and how you will see yourself working in your new role as a FNP? I have almost 3 years of expereince as a RN. I have worked in a level 1 trauma ED and now work in a level 1 trauma pediatric hospital. I have worked with all age groups and different and I feel like I am ready for this new step in my career. However I can't seem to put that all into a powerfu essay without sounding too generic. I'm also not really sure what I want to do once I obtain my FNP degree, so I'm having a hard time answering that part of the essay. If anybody has any suggestions I would really appreciate it! Thank you again in advance!

You have a lot of great experience, and so if you want to make a powerful essay, go back to a time when something happened that really inspired you. It could be something you did to help a patient or it could be something a patient said to you. In three years, you must many stories! Once you find that inspirational moment, you can either write about that story, or write about that feeling.

When I was applying for grad school, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do either. But knowing what an RN can do vs what an NP can do, you can begin to think about how you can deliver patient care in a different way. Start there, and think about how YOU can make a difference. Good luck!

I think we may have had the same essay assignment. Sounds very familiar to mine. When I applied, most of my experience had been in cardiac with an ethnically diverse population. I therefore wrote about what I had learned in the way of cardiac nursing and as well cultural sensitivity, how I hoped obtaining an NP would allow me to expand my practice in that role, and how I hoped to work with certain populations to combat heart disease, etc. Hope this helps. Best of luck! :)
