We were told yesterday that we're required to wear white scrubs for our 45 minute pinning ceremony.
As students, we are required to buy and wear ceil blue scrubs.
They want us to buy a set of white scrubs to wear for this short, silly ceremony.
I, being the way I am, questioned this idiocy and pointed out that a lot of the students in my class can barely afford to go to school and still feed their kids and pay their bills, and firmly averred my deep disdain for making us buy these "wear once" scrubs. On top of $1300 tuition + books this semester, $50 "pinning fee", $139 BON application fee, $50 HESI fee, $20ish fingerprint fee, $200+ NCLEX fee.....I've had enough.
Am I just being a fartknocker about this, or do any of you see this as stupid, pointless, and lacking concern or awareness about the financial woes of nursing students? I'm in a better position to afford this than most of my classmates because I had savings from past employment and my wife has a good-paying nursing job.
Some of my classmates, I have had to buy their meals at the stupid "end of semester clinical group gathering at the most expensive restaurant we can find, where we give the employed instructor the gift we managed to scrounge up $10/ea to buy" because some kissass, or often, the instructor, picks PF Changs instead of Shoneys.
It wouldn't be so bad if any of the hospitals here allowed whites (most of them have color-enforced dress codes), but to add ONE MORE expense, to be used for one stupid ceremony...well, it aggravated me.
The instructor, more used to meek and mild students who don't question the status quo, blinked about 10 times and then informed me I should start a petition to be given to the director of our program.
Get out of my wallet, damn you. *shakes fist*
Thats good. Now you know what to expect but maybe your school is different. If you need to wear white start looking in consignment shops, salvation army or maybe you can find someone who can lend you one. Or even better maybe a family member wants to buy you a gift and doesn't know what to buy you here is the first gift. There are also some websites that have sales, or how about ebay?
Actually, what's ironic is that my school simply has you wear white scrubs, which is the same as what we wear to clinicals. So at my pinning I'll just haul out my most accpetable pair.
I tend to gravitate towards threads that speak to themes about causing unecessary problems for the poor.
LOL, we are all poor. Thank God we have this opportunity to become nurses and improve our lives and hopefully our children won't have to go through what we have. And the example that we are setting will show them the importance of getting a good education. I see we are both older and have discovered the woes of being poor. I guess thats why I am so adamant about participating in the pinning ceremony. We are saying goodbye to the old and entering in to a whole new world. What a great celebration it will be.
Maybe it boils down to how close you are to your classmates? I couldn't imagine not sharing a special moment like pinning with them. It's a memory I'll cherish forever.
BUT I totally respect those that don't feel as I did/do. AND I completely understand not having the money for something you'll only wear once. Therefore I'll be glad to donate a brand new w/tags Cherokee Style #1743 XL white top to any taker...then all you'll need is white pants.

Maybe a consignment shop. We have a lot of those. Come to think of it one of the students mentioned we have a store that sells only used scrubs. I believe about 2-3 dollars a piece. Maybe they have something like that in your area. When is your pinning?
