Endorsing license question

Published

Hi all, I hope I posted this in the right section and forgive me if I didn't..

I have just moved from NC to MT.. While in NC I had anticipated that I would be able to take my NCLEX there and since I didn't have an address in Montana yet, applied for North Carolina licensing though I knew I was going to move.. (had planned on transferring it).. I recived my ATT and it had no dates that were before my moving date.. I am now in Montana and am taking the NCLEX tomorrow knowing that my license though will be for North Carolina.. Does anyone know how long it takes in general for the license to be processed so that I can just transfer it to MT? Do I have to wait until the 'hard copy' of the NC license comes (if I were there I would have the temporary permit, would that be able to transfer?) in order to begin the endorsement to MT? The BON here said that they do all their transfers at the end of the month so at least I know that answer, but I am wondering how long it will take to get my license to even be eligible to get transfered..

I realize that I should have waited until I actually moved to MT to apply for licensure, but at the time they assured me that since I was an August grad, there would be plenty of dates available to take it beforehand and would have plenty of time for the NC license to come through and then transfer..

I hope this is not too confusing and hope that the answer isn't state specific in which case I aplogize, I have a hard time getting a hold of the BON here..

Thanks in advance..

If your application for NCLEX was based on your NC info and the ATT came from the NC Board, you will be given a NC license after you pass your test. THen you need to apply to the Montana board for a MT license. If BOTH states are compact states you would be able to work with the NC license, pending MT license coming in later. Otherwise, you cannot work until you pass NCLEX, get your NC license then get the MT license. Go to http://www.ncsbn.com to find out who is compact and to get contact information for MT board. This too shall pass!

Thank you purplemania for your response.. Montana is not a compact state so unfortunately I will have to wait for my NC license to come through.. :o How long do I have to wait after the NCLEX for my NC license to officialy be eligible for transfer? Do I have to wait until it is official or could I get (even though I"m not there) the temporary license and submit the application to Montana then? Or do I have to wait until the 'hard copy' comes and then submit the application..?

Unfortunately, if the nurse in question has moved to Montana, and even if it was a compact state, the compact part would no longer be valid.

A Compact License is only good if your residence remains the same, such if you are doing a travel nurse assignment, or live on the border between two states, otherwise, it becomes null and void if you move.

As soon as a nursing licnese number is assigned to you, the application can be processed by the Board of Nursing. You need a permanent license number before a license can be endorsed.

Thank you Suzanne4 for your reply, that's the answer that I needed in regard to needing the permanent license number.. On average, how long does it take to get the permanent number? I'm guessing 4-6 weeks just for that and then another 4-6 weeks for Montana to endorse me, do you agree?
