employment question

Published

I have interviewed and have been offered a position (pending drug screen and background check, which I will pass). On the application it does ask you if you have any friends or relatives incarcerated. My husband has an uncle in a federal prison in another state. I listed it because I am honest. Do you think that would prevent me from being hired?

It's always better to be honest! I don't have any experience with this BUT I really really don't think it will affect you getting the job. If anything, they'll ask you about it casually, but it isn't significant at all! Good luck :)

I think it's referring to someone you know there at the facility because if its an issue they can move the inmate. Just talk to your HR person or your supervisor.

The main reason that this question is asked is to see if you know any inmates in the system that you are being hired for. There might be adjustments for separation that would need to be made, depending upon the situation.

We have never decided not to hire someone who we interviewed because they answered the question "yes". However, if it turns out that an applicant lied during the interview or the application process, that could be grounds for termination. Best to be truthful.

I had a brother-in-law who became incarcerated in another state. Even though I had no contact with him, I reported this to my employer.

Thanks for all the replies. It did not matter that I had an incarcerated relative by marriage in another state. Apparently a lot of families have one somewhere along the line and did not affect me getting hired. Yay!
