Employement in Hospitals Toronto

Are there Nurses who were hired by Hospitals in Toronto recently.

I could easily find a job in Long term Care and through different agencies as a visiting nurse but I could not find a job in Hospitals.

I was told by employment consultants and HR staff that it is cheaper to hire somebody through agency and not directly(agencies are not unionized ). So hospitals barely hire now, especially RNs. Sometimes they do hire internal applicants to the positions that have not been published on line.

What are you experiences? Please specify whether you are RN or RPN.

I'm an RN who moved from Toronto to AB last year. I had an offer from the hospital where I finished my consolidation, but many Toronto hospitals have been on hiring freezes for 4 years. Many of my friends either left the GTA or are working casual in TO. Continue applying, but be prepared to accept agency or LTC if you need to start working right away.

Just keep at it. A lot of hospital are on a hiring freeze to balance their budget. Not to mention, many hospitals are either cutting RN positions or converting them into RPN positions. Its sad that hospitals butcher nursing positions as a means of saving money

I've been gone from ON for over a year, and the job market is no better. Unfortunately, the market for new grads continues to be poor. Until you have 1 to 2 years experience as a nurse, the prospects are few, but not impossible. Aside from hospitals, look at nursing homes, clinics, public health, maybe agency. In this economy, you have to be willing to take what you can get.

to OP, i'm not sure about the hiring freeze. I just finished my first day of orientation today at Sunnybrook here in toronto. My guesstimate, easy, we're more than 20 new RNs there. some were even hired full-time.

Hi there,

I was hired last year into the Resource Team at St Joe's. There are positions out there, They're just tough to get into. There are so many internal people applying to jobs as well as us on the outside. Keep at it. Part time can be a good option as there are more than enough hours to keep you going and make equivalent if not more than what you would get being full-time. Make sure you look at ALL the hospitals around TO. There are quite a few. If it helps, look at indeed.ca. There are quite a few postings everyday for positions in TO hospitals on that site.
