EMORY ABSN+MSN 2018

Published

So I decided to start a thread for the Fall 2018. Any current/prospective student on here? What GPA did you have when you applied and how competitive is the selection process? If you don't mind sharing your work experience and GRE score, that will be awesome. For those who are enrolled, do you mind sharing your experience?

Hi @nurseB_2NP,

I found the e-mail in my spam folder as I was clearing it out and came across it. You might find it in your spam folder as well.

I thought the same as you and thought perhaps it hasn't been implemented yet but if you go on the website and look under the area that lists join specialties, Midwifery + FNP has a big disclaimer that says that the joint specialty is no longer accepting applications.

Joint Specialty Programs | Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing | University | Atlanta GA

The alternatives given were to decide on one track and the e-mail said to do so by clicking on the link and applying but since I have already applied, I am not sure how to go about doing that. I already sent a query to their nursing questions e-mail address for prospective applicants to ask the same questions that you posed above because I would like to know as well but so far they haven't come back to me yet.

Yeah, like you I was excited about the joint specialty as well more so because Emory is a great school and like I mentioned in my post above I believe that I would be an even more effective midwife if I also can provide primary care not just during or after their pregnancy but during the entire lifespan.

Hey TangoDeux,

I checked my spam folder and nothing... I saw the update on the website and it was definitely updated recently. Hmmm...keep me posted on what they say in response to your email because for those of us that already applied for the dual specialty this is not something we were waiting for.

I just got a response from Emory explaining the situation so this is what I know so far. I am glad that they have been so responsive given the change was so sudden:

1) For those of us who already submitted our applications, we do not need to resubmit.

2) But we will need to e-mail them let them know which track we are choosing and they will update our application for us, either FNP or midwifery. From what I understand midwifery can only be taken as a stand alone specialty going forward. We are free to take dual specialties in other combinations if Emory offers them but if we choose midwifery, it can only be taken as a singe specialty and can not be combined with any other specialty.

3) Yes, we will need to update our essay to reflect the new track that we choose on our application.

4) Why they decided to discontinue the dual specialty, I didn't really expect a straightforward response to this but they basically said it was something that the administration had been considering for awhile and they decided to implement with immediate effect. I have a couple of theories about this. I have read that the FNP specialty is currently oversaturated at Emory. I have been reading the threads going back a few years and I believe that some of the students posted that because FNP is so popular it is hard to get everyone into their required classes or find enough professors, if you add in the dual specialty midwifery and FNP students it becomes quite a lot of students. From the midwifery side, I believe midwifery at Emory is also a very popular specialty choice, if midwifery students are taking a dual specialty, it will take longer for us to graduate which means less spaces are opening up for new students to attend. I also believe the secondary reason is that most midwives can and do practice primary care albeit under the midwifery umbrella since midwives do provide gynecological care, preventative health, and health assessments. But without the NP certification, we will be limited to that particular scope of practice. The third reason is rather then offering a dual specialty, they will offer a NP post master certificate where you can obtain the ability to sit for the FNP boards and become a FNP but you will have to stay longer and pay more tuition. I will caveat all of this by saying upfront that this is just speculation on my part; but I have been looking at various programs and looking at the direction that the NP practice is headed for the past three years while I worked on my pre-reqs and learning more about being a nurse so I am confident that within the above mix of reasons, some of the ones I listed will apply.

Let me know if anyone on this board also hears something different or has something to add. It always helps to have more information.

Hello,

I am new to this forum but thought I would share my stats. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and a prerequisite GPA of 3.8. My GRE was 159V 161Q and 5.0. What is the likelihood that I will gain entrance into this program?

Also, I called Emory today and they told me to email Katie Kennedy because she is in charge of making the necessary changes for the dual degree confusion.

So just a quick check-in with a question. I submitted my application on July 6th and I still have all my pre-reqs outstanding with red x's. I already e-mailed the nursing questions e-mail twice and they keep telling me that they will check off my pre-reqs once my application has been reviewed. Everything else has green check marks including my transcripts so the university does have all of my grade information for those pre-reqs. I know that some of you have posted that you have already gotten your pre-reqs checked off but is there anyone else in the same boat as me with everything else checked off except for the pre-reqs? Since I submitted so early, I thought that my pre-reqs would have been checked off by now. It could be that my community college classes were done outside of Georgia so maybe they need to verify that the classes meet their requirements? I just want to double check as the priority deadline is coming up and with the changes to the dual specialty being so unexpected, I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Thank you for your help in advance.

Hey TangoDeux,

Thanks for the info regarding the dual specialty.

Honestly, I am not sure if they review applications in the order they were received. I also submitted my application in the beginning of July and just last week got my pre-reqs checked off. From previous posts, I have noticed that some people applied in August and immediately got their pre-reqs checked off. I would say be patient and wait until the end of the week or mid next week to check in with them again.

Today I decided to check the website again and the message about the dual specialty in CNM+FNP not accepting new applications is now gone. Does that mean they will be considering our applications? The confusion continues...

Hi nurseB_2NP,

Thanks for the info and for the heads up on the change to the website but I'm going to work with the assumption (for now) that the speciality is discontinued until they tell me differently as the person i spoke to said that they are actively changing the site to remove references to CNM + FNP. But it is shaping up to be similar to last year's cohort where a lot of people were confused about admittance and deadline dates.

I did write to them and convey my disappointment that they discontinued the dual track specialty in the middle of the application period especially so suddenly. I explained why being both a NP and midwife would help further my future career as a nurse so hopefully other people did as well and our collective voices have made an impact.

We can only wait and see. But I will give it another week and see where my pre-reqs stand. Maybe they are waiting for me to choose a speciality which I have done but I haven't received a response acknowledging they have received and updated my application yet. Have you?

Have you gone back to them with your choice?

I applied in early August, and still have red X's next to my prerequisites, even though my transcripts have been received. I was told they are still reviewing and they will be checked off as that happens. I wouldn't worry too much, as long as all other documents have been received I think we are good.

I have actually been trying to contact them and have had no luck.

I never received any notification of having to change my program selection and they have looked through my application. So, if I am being honest, I am not sure what's going on.

I have a red x next to my GRE, even though I had the score sent Sept. 8th. It is a very confusing process and it makes me a bit nervous.

Thanks @HMorenoT, thanks for the advice. Am glad that I am not the only one.

I think you should e-mail them to ask and get some clarification. @Kirby1771 mentioned that the person that you should contact was Katie Kennedy about making the election. I looked her up and she is the Director of Admissions. Sara Re was the one that responded to my e-mail about the changes to the dual specialty. She is the Associate Director of Admissions so you should be able to contact either individual and ask. Perhaps, they let some people into the dual specialty if they applied early enough and you made the cut off?
