Tips on being a GOOD MICN

Taking my MICN test on Friday and excited to have this new responsibility. Can I get any tips or tricks on becoming a strong MICN in our ER? Any pitfalls or bad habits to avoid? I don't want to be one of the nurses that the medics groan when they pick up the radio!

What is an MICN?

Based on your question about being the medics groan at.... Are you talking about the RN that takes the ambulance calls and places patients? If so, you need to see what your facility requires first. Our call log includes the call time, the medic #, the CC, and the ETA. All of this info in inputed on ONE line. I created one in an Excel table with 30 lines per page if that gives you an idea.

I also wanted to know the patient's vital signs along with the CC. If the patient's CC was chest pain I want to know if he/she has a cardiac history. If the pt is having an MI, I want to know history and who the pt's cardiologist is. This was at the main cards hospital so all of the medic crews knew to bring the patient there.

All of our calls were treated like radio calls so kept it simple and to the point and used radio jargon for clarity. It wasn't conversational at all. "Ten-four. Affirmative." Of course there were times when we would have to ask a question or clarify but it was short and to the point. We ended it with "Copy that Medic 12. Bed assignment on arrival. XYZ clear."
