I agree with the vacation scheduling during the semester, don't do it, you never know if you need those 12 hours for sick time.

Yang, I don't think you will have to do careplans for 4 patients. Most of us only had to do careplans in the beginning of our 3rd semester and than no more.

Now in 4th, just this week we had our first week on the floor (after last week computer orientation/etc, and psych. before that, which included a major careplan). We had to go pick two patients the night before, fill out a mini careplan. Then go to the floor the next day, take care of the patients and instead of using our usual major careplanformats, use the hospital history admission forms and long shift assessment downtime forms to get more info, and turn all this into our instructor that day. Then the next day we had from 10:00 am to 05:00 pm at the Desoto Library to do the whole major careplan. 5 nursing diagnosis, labs, meds, patho, teaching, psychosocial, article review, nursing diagnosis priority list, bio, everything, on one of the patients. We could not prepare anything the night before, because we did not know which patient of the two we get. It was very stressful, most did not even eat lunch.

I felt like I did such an awful job:crying2:, I hope she can read my chicken scratch, lol. I did not have a laptop, some did, though.

We have to do a few more mini care plans on the next clinicals, but then we should be done with careplans, yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. I can't wait. I hope I at least made a 78 on my major so I don't have to do that again, that was sooooooooooo stressful.

Why at the DeSoto libarary? That's really scary! So I suppose you can kind of have a list for each one of nursing diagnoses that you are considering in advance. Are you able to bring in your own sources? Careplan books and such or only library materials? If you take notes of your own to keep, isn't there some you can prepare ahead of time for both patients so that it goes more quickly? My wheels are turning! lol

The DeSoto library was just the place our instructor chose. I know that some do it at the hospital ( I heard Mrs. Chapman does). You can think of the ND you want to use, but you can't write anything out the previous day, the only thing our instructor let us write out was the med list. Anyways you don't know what patient you will get. And yes you can bring all your Careplanbooks, dictionary, Iggy and references. OH, and we had to turn in an article per patient the day before, too, but than write the critique that day.

3rd semester we had to turn in a few minis, one major, a teaching paper, and a teaching project.

4th, we had to do a major for psych....which was fairly easy.

For our med/surg patients, FY has a paper she will be emailing us that has all information we fill out one 1 sheet. (3 patients on a sheet.)

We are not picking patients the day before.

As far as the Major, we haven't gone into depth about it, but it's not her focus I think. I think she is more focused on the clinical portion, not the paperwork. (I think that's how it should be!)

We haven't been told about a one-day major careplan party. :uhoh3:

So, I don't think we'll be doing it that way.

I had heard that in 4th semester, that is how the major careplan is done (as a 1 day timed thing), but I wasn't sure how the logistics of it worked. I hope we let go of the careplan thing early on as well. They drive me crazy because they take so much time. Thanks for the info though :)

I don't know if you guys do it diff. They told us that they want to see if we as seniors can do the whole thing like that, because we should be ready, or something like that. I thought it was for everyone, but of course, NL might have a different way of doing things. If so, than don't worry about it, who knows what they have you guys do. I am just glad, I have it behind me. I'm still recuperating, lol.

I really think it has alway been 'per instructor' on how things are ran... the amount of paper work due, how many patients to pic, etc, not necessarily by campus.

Believe me, not one clinical group does the same as another one at NLC. I wish it were more uniform, but I guess we get to learn from each other's methods.

Good luck on your ENDO test! :) :typing

Specializes in OR Internship starting in Jan!!.

How's everything? Me, I'm hanging in there ... barely.

I didn't do so hot on the first test, but I'm trying to make up for it. What a great way to spend Spring Break -- studying for the cardio test!

Hope all is well!

Did everyone get the email about the error in the Iggy book? I wonder if it's just an April Fool's day joke?
