Hey -- I have a quick question: what is "voiding spontaneously"? To me, that would mean that they cannot control when they urinate, right? But that doesn't make sense with "If voiding spontaneously, assess pattern." Help?
That's a good question. For me, it means that pt can void and doesn't need catheter. So you can ask about the frequency, color, amount, etc. What do you all think?
And good luck with PA.

That's exactly right...frequency, amount, color, clarity, burning, itching. The pt is voiding spontaneously without a catheter. If not spontaneously, you look at the cath bag to see color/amount/clarity.
Amount is important because if it is dribbling then it could indicate UTI, same with freq, clarity, burning.....
All you ever wanted to know about urinating spontaneously, and then some. :roll
Yet another reason why I love this board Thanks!!!
Ahh, I had to look it up in Webster, because spontaneous doesn't mean that to me. But, it looks like they are using the 3rd definition:
3 : controlled and directed internally : SELF-ACTING
So, now I understand that. What about "assesses pattern." What do I say? 'How many times have you gone to the bathroom today?' Is that enough for the 'pattern,' or do I need more (maybe, 'how many times a day do you normally go to the bathroom?')?
Thanks so much!!

You can ask both. How many times today and if it is a normal pattern for the pt. Then ask everything else that Funny described. (It also depends on your instructor. Some of them have specific requirements for PA. )
