ED RN moving to Ann Arbor from Chicago?

Published

Hello allnurses

I'm an ED RN in Chicago right now with about 18mo experience. In about 2 years I think I'll be looking to move to SE Michigan - my wife is from the Ann Arbor/Ypsi border and I would like to move around there (she is longing to return home and I love MI myself), hopefully on the A2 side of the border.

My question is...renting in A2 looks more expensive than where I live in Chicago now. Would landing a job in U of M's ER with 2-3yr of experience be a good enough pay to afford Ann Arbor, since the job is in the same city?

How does St. Joseph Mercy compare?

What other cities/towns (anywhere between Ann Arbor and Detroit preferably closer to I94) would you recommend moving to, and what hospitals in those respective towns?

So far I like Canton, Dearborn Hts, to live in based on my visits.

Hey! Former Chicago transplant here :) I'm now in Lansing, MI and it is SO much less expensive than Chicago and Ann Arbor. Something to consider. Lansing is the state capital, so it's a nice place. There are 2 main hospitals in the area. There are definitely posts open in the ED in both of them. Just another place to consider. I've only lived in Lansing here in MI, but I do like the Auburn Hills area (right off of I94), you might want to check out that area, too.

Good luck with your job search :D

Hey, thank you.

Though I prefer the Ann Arbor or greater Detroit area since that's where my wife is from, and what I'm familiar with, Lansing has definitely caught my eye for being another college town!

How does it compare to AA? Do they have a similar vibe because of their big universities? How's the diversity there? Which hospitals were you referring to in Lansing?

Thanks for your help, and I'm glad you like it there. I work with about a half dozen Michiganders in my ER and I tell them, "you're going the wrong way!"

I've only been to Ann Arbor once, so I'm not sure I'm a good judge of the difference between the two towns. Ann Arbor is definitely bigger. Totally different vibe between East Lansing & Ann Arbor. I'm partial to Lansing because I live here :)

The 2 main hospitals in Lansing are Sparrow and McLaren, both have open positions in ED available.

you can live just outside of AA and save a lot of money, do you have a BSN? UofM is currently seeking magnet status so it is literally impossible for an ADN to be hired right now, only if they are close to completion of a BSN program can the managers even request a waiver. I drive an hour and have low cost of living, good schools that aren't so big and overwhelming.

Hi, thank you, what are some good areas right outside AA to live in?

So far I'm only aware of Ypsilanti and while it has decent pockets in it my concern would be good schools (which Ypsi doesn't have).

Thanks again

Saline & Clinton have good schools and decent prices homes, depends on your budget, go a bit farther south to Adrian and you'll get a lot more home for your money and the schools are still good, our county has an extension of Jackson college kids can attend at no cost while in HS, my youngest starts the EMT program in August. Puts you right in the middle of AA & Toledo for jobs and shopping
