EC RN-BSN? Yes or no?

Published

I just got my RN and now I'm looking at RN-BSN options. I really liked the RN program at EC, but I've noticed that many of EC students went elsewhere for BSN. What is the main reason for doing that?

I'd really appreciate if you share your thoughts and reasons why did you choose to get your BSN elsewhere, and which school you decided to go.

Thank you!

Money is a factor here too!! Why am I even thinking about this already? ha! No, I'm going to a state university RN-BSN online. I can go accelerated full time - 1 year or I can go part-time for 2. I haven't had the courage to tell my husband yet.. I applied last fall. oops!

LOL :D:D:D

Have you got your RN already? If I remember right you just passed CPNE :) (Or I need my coffee, lol)

Yeah, on the way home from Wisconsin we were so excited because we wouldn't have to dump money on tuition or supplies anymore. I didn't feel like it was a good time to tell him I had already applied to somewhere else!

my total cost for the excelsior bsn program is around $8600. i only have 2 classes left so that figure is accurate. i bought all my books on ebay and barnes and noble when they have their awesome deals!

Nope!! But my program just wants an official transcript.. I'm anxiously waiting for it to be updated. I don't even know if it'll work out. I may wait until winter. I know I have a few general education things I have to take which I may sign up for here in a bit.

Any advice on how to break it to my husband , let me know! haha

Erin, I'm already looking at several different colleges and universities, too!It won't be EC, that's for sure. I haven't applied yet, because I'm not sure whether I want to go on for my MSN, or just go to BSN and do MSN later. My husband does know about this, but he keeps mentioning that he hopes I take a little break. LOL. I'll take one, but I don't know how long it will be. LOL.

Ok, why? Please :)

Excelsior drove me nuts (BSN). They want videos for every freaking class as well as certain clinical environments to which I simply do not have access.

I am neither a producer nor in an urban hospital. I do not have a clinical exam room I can "borrow" for a couple of days to get my production up to EC standards.

For distance learning they made it damned difficult.

I enrolled in Chamberlain and am doing the 9 month plow-through-and-be-done plan. Much less stress ad certainly as good an education.

Where I'm at in Michigan, a good portion of the jobs post for BSN's. On the other side of things, we would like to start a family and when I went to get the Inderal for the CPNE, the doctor told me that time is not on my side if we want more than one child. Talk about added pressure!! So, I'm torn, my husband who knows me better than myself keeps saying I wouldn't be able to handle classes and kids and he's probably right. But on the other side of things, I feel like I should just keep plugging away. If I get a taste of freedom, I won't want to go back!!

Suesquatch mentions a couple of the reasons. The other biggy is, they have additonal required classes that I don't feel like taking. LOL. I already have quite a few prereq's done for my BSN, and EC wants to add a couple of classes more than I would need elsewhere. When I compared EC to Otterbein, here in Ohio, Otterbein fits my needs better. I've also looked at Case-Western and a couple of other schools but haven't made a decision yet.

It's the same here in Ohio, Erin. Everywhere I turn, more postings for BSN preferred. I want to give myself an edge in the hiring department. LOL. As far as kids go, I've got 5 of them and it is a challenge, but I love it. The best part is sitting down with 4 out of 5 (the little one is only 2yrs old) and doing homework with them. My 15 year old even quizzes me. LOL.

sue, where did you get the info "excelsior drove me nuts (bsn). they want videos for every freaking class as well as certain clinical environments to which i simply do not have access." i only had two classes that require a video. i did my teaching session in my home, and for the physical assessment i did it at the local ymca in the massage/pt room which they pretty much all have. my son recorded them with standard equipment that most people already have in their homes. it is better than traveling and also better than clinicals that some colleges require. my videos were not even close to a big production, they just want to be able to see and hear you and your clients. but hey it is not for everyone, but i felt i needed to clear the misconception of all classes needed to have a video tape sent in. it is only two: teaching across the cultures and health assessment and promotion in nursing practice.
