i have about a year before i qualify but was just wondering how easy it is to get a hospital job as a newly qualified adult nurse. i do not plan to work in the trust i am being trained in as im considering heading into london.im just worried that my lack of experience will mean no-one will want to touch me with a barge pole!Any tips at all would be really helpful??

the problem isn't about you being newly qualified but that trusts are presently cutting back with nurses being included in the cutbacks :angryfire whether this is any dfferent in 12 months time is another matter.

I agree with Silver Dragon, the problem will be the lack of funds that the trusts have. A year is a long time in the NHS at the moment. Big changes are ahead. I would try not to worry too much at the moment just enjoy your training.
thanks very much for the advice. I suppose i'll just have to see how things go...

I concur with Anna, it has more to do with funding rather than your newly-qualified status. I'm mentoring a student who will qualify in September this year. She told me their whole group attended a job fair recently and were told none of them could be considered for a postion, as by then, there would be no jobs for them. They were only giving consideration to those who will qualify in June, but after that.......nothing. Very worrying, and very disheartening for all student nurses
wow!I know i am quite a while off but i would like to start exploring other options like agency nursing as I do not mind travelling and do not have many commitments? i would even consider moving abroad if the jobs were available elsewhwere. Its worrying but I suppose I'll just have to wait my turn and see whats going on once my time arrives.
what you have to be aware of is with changes to UK nurse training for some countries you don't meet the criteria as you don't meet training hours both theory and practical in all areas. If you do a search on here you will see a few threads on his. Whilst you are still at university may be worth checking hours and if down on some see if you can arrange something with the niversity on catch up. Foe example to work in the US you need hours in general, paeds, mental health and midwifery if your training doesn't cover all of these (both practical and theory) then you will need to make up the hours

i agree with all your comments, but being a student who has been told that there will "probably" be no jobs when i qualify in september doesn't spur me on to want to complete the course. it is extremely disheartening that this supposed 'job for life' has now taken a turn for the worse and little or no support has been set up in the local trust for the students that were trained and were wishing to stay. it is a crazy situation, but one that i have been in before in a different life, but still no less worrying or stressful.
i'm sure everything will change again in a month or so, but the nhs seems to be fire fighting and not looking at root causes.
hey ho! just need to keep my head down, get on with it and hope for the best come september!

i really feel for you, the nhs is in dire straights. when i qualified there were no jobs then because there were too many newly qualified nurses so when you went for a job you were up against 10-20 other nurses. so i worked for the hospital bank and got a job that way. of course now we have nhs professionals instead of the bank.
please complete your course we need nurses and this problem has to be solved one way or another. good luck and keep your chin up
