easier direct entry BSN programs?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello Everyone I am looking for a pre-licensure BSN program that is not super challenging to get into. I live in California and as many of you its super competitive to get into any of the programs in my area. My gpa isn't that great at around a 3.4 and I need to remediate my teas score which is below and 80. I know my chances are super low to get into a school in my area so I am considering out of state schools and was wondering if anyone knows some good programs that would be worth my while to apply to. I would consider going to a private school out of my state if I can finish it within 2-3 years with transferred credits and get accepted ASAP. I have finished the general basic science classes and general ed. I am going to apply to local community colleges in my area just to have that possibility, but average wait time to get in is like 3+ years, its not likely for me to get in and its only associates. I really just want my BSN already. I have also applied to this private college in Wisconsin MSOE and I got accepted into their nursing program. It is quite expensive, but I do get some merit scholarships and I am waiting to see how many years it would take with credits transferred over... Do you guy thinks it would be worth it to go? I am tired of waiting and plan to start a BSN program as soon as Fall 2020 so I need to explore options ASAP. Any advice or school recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Ashley

This question gets asked quite a bit. Try going to states where there is a lower population. Others on this site have mentioned states such as Michigan, Indiana, North/South Dakota, Wyoming, Wisconsin where they have smaller towns/cities and not millions of people like SFO, LAX, NYC, MIA, etc.. I would say if you got accepted into a school in Wisconsin already, pack your bags because it looks as if Wisconsin will be your home for the next few years. Not only that, you may want to stay there to gain your experience and then try to move back to California if that's your plan.

You really just have to look outside of California if your grades aren't so hot. 3.40 is actually not bad, especially if you have A's in all of your prerequisites.

I will definitely look into those cities... If anyone knows schools there that they recommend please do share. I do worry that i will be at MSOE for quite a while and more time=more expenses, room, board, etc. since it’s a private school. I was hoping to transfer to a school that would allow me to finish within 2-3 years at the least so it wouldn’t be too costly. At this point I just really need more options. Thank you for your comment I appreciate the advice.

Easier direct entry BSN programs? Define easier. No matter where you apply it will be competitive. Instead of trying to find easier programs (which I don't believe exist), make your resume stronger. I was in a very similar situation as you. I graduated in 2010 with a BS in biology with a cumulative gpa of 3.22. Nearly a decade later I decided to retake prenursing prereqs of anatomy, physio, and chem since a few of the schools I was interested in had time limits of my science classes from my undergrad. After 2 years of retaking my prereqs I got A's in all my classes. To strengthen my resume further I volunteered at a local hospital while also becoming a physio tutor for a semester. I was just accepted into the ME-MSN program at Uni of San Francisco. Some other programs I was interested in (which I highly encourage you look into if you're in Socal) were UCLA, UCI, CSULA, CSULB, CSUF, Western, and Charles Drew. I'm not sure about your situation, but these schools have nursing programs for applicants with degrees in fields other than nursing, which was perfect for me as I am changing my career to nursing. I hope this helps. If I could do it, anyone can do it. Good luck!
