Duty Stations

If everyone Air Force could please state which choice of base you got. For example, your first choice, second or third. I am really considering coming back into the Air Force active once i finish with my BSN. When i went active duty enlisted almost noone got their first choice or any of them for that matter. I just want to get an idea of what my chances are. I am not so concerned on the exact base i choose first, but just something from my top five would be nice. I REALLY REALLY appreciate you guys taking the time to answer the question. Once again thanks tons!!!!

Specializes in L&D, mother/baby, antepartum.

I got my third choice:

1. Elmendorf

2. Lackland

3. Langley

I'm in the process of trying for my first choice again...

So how does that work GREEK? If you don't get your first choice is there the possibility of requesting again? That would be cool.

Specializes in OR, Clinic, Med-Surg.

I got Elmendorf as my 1st assignment but I won't be there until a little less than a year from now after I complete my BSN, COT, & NTP. It is considered to be overseas and it was my 4th choice on that list. I wanted Lakland, Langley, Andrews, Eglin, or Wright-Patterson.

Although the more I find out about my future base, the more excited I get. :D

I'm already AD and currently working at Langley. I almost have two years TOS (time on station) and I'm trying to PCS to Elmendorf. When I was first accepted to the AF I just took what they offered me. I know other people who did not like what they were offered and tried to negotiate their assignment. Some were successful and finally got what they wanted and some were not and declined their commission. As others have stated in other posts, there is very little room for negotiation right now since so many people are trying to get in.

I got what was either my first or second choice - we wanted either Lackland AFB, in San Antonio or MacDill in Tampa. I think I put MacDill first because we really wanted Lackland (I shot a game of craps to try and reverse-psych the AF!), and I got Lackland.

And I love it - I truly love Wilford Hall. I'm on the bone marrow transplant unit - I was an oncology RN at Duke before I came here.

Haha that's hilarious Carolina I think I

might try that. I REALLY REALLY want Eglin but I see everyone puts it as their first choice and don't get it.

Carolinapooh nailed it. I'm not sure what it is with the reverse psychology, but if you act like you want one base really bad you probably won't get it. In retrospect, I should have listed Elmendorf last :)

Overseas bases have to manned at 100% and CONUS bases can be manned around 80%. What does that mean? Well if you put an overseas base down it takes priority over the CONUS bases when manning is short. I don't know if your recruiters explained that to you, but I thought I would throw it out there just in case.

My anesthesia class had 7 AF graduates out of that seven there are four of us going to Elmendorf, if Elmendorf was anywhere on our list we got it. It didn't matter if it was 15th on the list we still got Elmendorf...lol.

Well that's good to hear since Elmendorf is at the TOP of my ADP and I only put three choices. Perhaps I should go back in and edit it so there is only one choice--lol! I hope someone out there is paying attention because I'm dying to get out of VA!

Specializes in ED. ICU, PICU, infection prevention, aeromedical e.

Gee, if they let you out of VA, can I have your spot? That's #1 on my list. lol. But seriously, why don't you like VA?

I grew up here so it's really not one of my favorite places. I only put it on my list because I knew it was a busy L&D and I wanted to get the best experience possible. It's been a great assignment but I'm ready to move on to something new.

Some nice things about the area: the beaches, the culture, the proximity to the mountains, and the mild weather. I absolutely love Jamestown and Williamsburg, VA. It's really cool to live near such culturally rich locations. I also have to say that living near Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country has it's pluses too. In the summer I practically live on the beach with my kids (my parents live right on the Chesapeake Bay so I have premium parking!) Personally I like the beaches in Va Beach better than in Hampton & Yorktown, but I may be biased because I grew up there.

I tease about this place being terrible, but it's not really that bad. I know people who love it here--lots of retired military folks. It's not on my list of retirement spots, but I can also think of worse places to live. If you end up heading this way, let me know and I'll be happy to help you out!
