Duke is one of the best hospitals in the country.
We are Joint Commission certified as a hospital and as a health system (3 hospitals). Magnet. Joint Commission certified in several specialties as well (I am an ortho nurse and we are Total Joint certified). Lots of great opportunities. I have been there 3 1/2 years and I love it. Is it perfect no, but it is a huge entity.
You may get different answers, but I would not want to work anywhere else. Pay is average compared to the other area hosp. but I find that the benefits that are offered more than make up for it. (although they just raised some of the differentials to be more competitive with other area hospitals). Anything you want to know, just ask. What department are you interviewing for?
It depends on the unit, I think. I worked there many years ago and was not happy and found that they were chronically understaffed and did not treat the nurses on my unit (OB) well. I don't know if anything has changed, though. The peds units are supposedly awesome, and the ortho nurses are quite happy there (as evidenced by the above poster). I find that opinions on DUMC are either one extreme or the other: people either love working there or hate it.
Yes! Also, that's something to keep in mind about Duke: the units that house the really "sick" patients tend to be the happier units. Their oncology units are really awesome. The peds bone marrow transplant unit is supposed to be a super cohesive, supportive environment. I have some friends who have had their kids as patients there, and were really pleased. The nurses are super sweet.Oncology units are really happy too.

Hey all. I was looking to relocate to North Carolina and have interview with Duke University Hospital. I am not familiar with the hospital. How is the reputation, nurse environment, salary? Is it a good hospital and good to work for?
