Duke ABSN Spring 2011

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi there-

My name is Sandy and I am applying to the Duke ABSN for Spring 2011, just wondering if there is anyone else out there applying? Only 2 months till the deadline and I am trying to get my personal statement finished, as well as spiffy up my resume!

I think I am anxious already! This may be a long ride!

Anyway....a little about me...

I have a BS in Environmental Management with a 3.73 GPA, didn't take the GRE, still working on the prerequisites but so far have a 4.0 in those classes.

I spent 10 years in the Navy, working as an aviation electronics technician and supervisor. Also did hazardous material control and other environmental stuff for my command. I also taught CPR for 5 or so years, as well as blood drive coordination. I was able to travel to a lot of neat places, and some that weren't! All-in-all it was a great experience for me. After leaving the military in late 2007, I worked for a semi-conductor company in RTP, doing research and development (not my favorite job). So, I decided to go to school for massage therapy, and I'm now a licensed therapist. So, that makes me something like 34 years young.

So, here I am....wanting to pursue a dream that I have had for long time! Thankfully I have the world's greatest husband! He is my rock and has encouraged me to take this leap! So let's do this!

I'm waiting for you! Hopefully someone will be here soon to go crazy in anticipation with me! :)

Who is actually deciding our fate?? Does anyone know who makes up this committee??

Painted, I hope you are right about Monday! I think I can survive that long. I'm really not sure who makes up the committee, but I think M is on it and there were a couple people at some of the info sessions on interview day that said they sit on the board, as well. We aren't supposed to post names on the forum, so I'll send you a message with the 2 names I know....

I am definitely interested in going for the NP too and I'm thinking about trying to get into a DNP program if possible. I'm interested in women's health and/or family practice.

In terms of going into the NP without work experience, I've heard that most people work during the NP program and then by the time you graduate you have a few years experience... so maybe that works out.

I also don't have any real medical or nursing experience... but I'm a sex educator and so I suppose that is technically in the health field...

Spring2011 - From what I gathered on my interview day, the decisions are made partly on a points systems. Each part of your application is given a score. Based on that score you are put in a category and possibly discussed further....?? But, who knows exactly. The whole process reminds me of Sorority/Fraternity recruitment in college. Hahaha! But I 'm sure it takes them all of Friday to go through everyone.

Specializes in ER/ICU.

Hi, everyone! I am too very nervous about their decision...

I enjoyed last Friday and hopefully I will be given a chance to study there.

But I know there are so many applicants with great credentials, so who knows...

Next Monday is my last day of summer semester,Yeah!!!

I'm not sure I can actually focus on my presentation during the day. =)

Good luck to everyone!

I got so anxious last night I couldn't sleep!!!! ahhhh

I'm going nuts over here :hdvwl:

Did anyone get the Fall information session email this morning from Duke? I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw a Duke email in my inbox...

No info session email here... Interesting!

Is the email just for a general info session, or specific for our cohort??

This is all it said...

"The Duke University School of Nursing will be having our Fall Information Session on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 from 5pm-7pm. We would be delighted if you were to attend. Please Click Here for additional information and to RSVP."

I'm not sure why they sent this to me....

elmo!! I did the same thing! I opened up my email about 830 this morning and ALL I saw was DUKE! LOL, looks like it's the info session for people who want to apply for the December deadline this year.

But me being the over-analytical person I am, thinks...did they send it cause I didn't make the cut-off for Spring? Ahhhhhhh!!! I've received emails about info sessions before though...

I got the email too and I just about freaked out! haha

It think it might be sent to people who requested more info before they applied...that is all I can think of?
