Hi guys! I haven't seen a thread yet for Duke's ABSN Fall 2017 yet, so just thought I'd get it started! I'm excited to be attending the open house later in September and look forward to meeting some of you there.
Hi Lolis-not sure where your numbers are coming from but I know RN's make $23 and some change per hour at Duke Hospitals without shift differential. So 8 months gross would be $28,704. Maybe you meant net? But it would be more than $14k. (Still not a lot with a tuition of $83k at Duke)Lexylynn-I am in the same boat as you...my head is ALL OVER THE PLACE...I WANT to go to Duke but I have a family and a mortgage. I'm deciding between Duke or applying to the community college here for fall of 2018, an Associate's degree. But RN's get paid the same here in NC with an ADN or RN BSN, and Duke will pay for the online BSN program for ADNs after you work for them for 2 yrs. I'm looking at $83k vs. $5k.....I'm still waiting on the Merit Scholarship decision but I doubt I received it. You had mentioned 60k above in one of your posts...do people actually receive that much from Duke? I'd be surprised if so.
Holly- Financial aid said you can receive anywhere from 10k to 60k in need based scholarships. I found it hard to believe myself and maybe we were right because I don't know of anyone who received that much lol. But, yeah I am pretty sure I will end up at my State University (Stony Brook University), it's still an Accelerated BSN and its saving me thousands. I'm waiting on that Merit too, but as you said, its a very LONG shot.
Jdictson- I'm glad you are able to attend Duke! Good to know the need based scholarship carries over to that last term as well. It's still super expensive for me though, in comparison to the other school I got into. This is a seriously tough call. I'm up in NY, so nurses here make a hell of a lot more money here as well. So I'm talking like 80K in debt in NC making $21 bucks an hour, and 40K in debt in NY at like $41 an hour. So, the financial part of it is huge for me. I loved NC, if I don't end up attending, maybe I'll move out there when I finish up this program in NY. The program here is only 12 months too, so it's a bit faster and I just want to get to work at this point lolol
I didn't receive it either. I have a lot to figure out but I'm leaning towards the local community college now. With 2 kids and a mortgage, it will be difficult to justify all of that debt. Ugh...Lexylynn, please let us know what you decide and good luck!
I actually just did all the math and Duke would cost me 47,000 more dollars and take more time (the other program is 12 months only). I'm gonna head on over to Stony Brook :) Still a great program and won't put in me in debt until I'm 100 haha
I know Duke is a prestigious school, but at the end of the day, we all sit for the same boards. We all will be nurses no matter where we went. We'll all reach the dream.
Good luck with your decision, Holly! I know it's a tough one to make.
I emailed Nora and we do not have to resend transcripts, I asked because I don't think mine would have had time to get there before the May 1 deadline. I changed my essays slightly, I didn't feel like there was much I could change since I spent so much time working on them the first time.

I called financial aid this morning and they told me that if you were awarded a need based scholarship then you should also receive some need based scholarship the 4th term as well. This information just made it so that I can now justify the cost of attendance! So excited and can't wait to see you all in August! Best of luck to the rest of you!
