Dual Citizen- need clarifications

Published

Hi guys! I have been reading multiple threads hoping to find an answer to my pressing question, but the answers that I have seen aren't all consistent.

I am currently a Nursing student in the Philippines, about to graduate in March 2010. My husband and I decided for me to study here as opposed to back at home (California) because he will be deployed to the Middle East and it would just make sense for me to be with family. I am, or should I say WAS fully an American Citizen. I was advised by the Bureau of Immigration to apply for Dual Citizenship as opposed to a student visa as it would be a much easier process. I did what I was told only to find out through some threads here that I am now required to get my local license (Philippine license) before I become eligible to take the NCLEX. Is there any truth to this? I intend to get licensed in California.

With that, I have also come across a statement explaining that if I do not hold a license where I graduated from, I need a written explanation as to why I do not have it. I was wondering if not intending to practice in the Philippines is good enough?

I appreciate all your help. I just want to get back home ASAP and based on the threads that I read, being a dual citizen makes it sound like it would prolong the process.

Thank you in advance! :specs:

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Each state has their own requirements and you need to contact them yourself and see if the will accept your application without a local licence. We have had some post that they had no problems and others post they had a lot of problems. You just can not predict so best thing is to contact them

Awesome! Will do! Thanks for your answer!

Specializes in CTICU.

Best thing might be to apply to CA and just include the letter stating why you are not sitting NLE. If your husband is active duty military and you want to come home to the States, that should be a good reason for them!

Not much point asking beforehand - you may still get a different reply when you actually send in application.

Thanks gillbert! :) After trying to connect for hours, I was finally able to talk to someone from the CA BON and they said license in the Philippines is not necessary in my case in order to be eligible to take the NCLEX.

Finally I can sleep well tonight. Haha.

Thanks for your help! :)
