The order is dilantin 5 mg/kg in a 50 lbs patient to be divided in 3 equal doses. Stock is 125 mg/ml. Waht is the current amt to be administered?
A. 3 ml
B. 2
C. 4
D 2.0
Correct and correct. The answer for #1 is 1.3, not 1.5. The ordered dose was 0.325 not 0.375. Also, you have to divide #2 by 3, because it is supposed to be split into 3 equal doses, so the answer is 0.3.
This was intentional on my part (uh yeah, right)... to demonstrate the value of showing all of one's work... which makes it very, very obvious where lie the mistakes.
Seriously, though... the single biggest problem people have in math is *not* showing all of their work... which leads to mistakes within the problem and which makes it difficult to figure out where one made an error...
and which eliminates your chance at partial credit :-)
In my case, I just over medicated both of my patients :-( because of not reading the problem carefully enough...
Another lesson: Always have somebody else check your work before you dose your patient... no matter how good you are at the calculations.
If you're certain you copied it correctly, then the only explanation is that you've got a crappy book full of typos.
For the first question, maybe option D is supposed to be 4/3 tabs instead of 3/4. 1.3 is approximately one and a third (=4/3).
For the second question, maybe option A is supposed to be 0.3 instead of 3?
Whoever wrote those questions, they really need a proof reader...
