Dropped out of ASN Program. Advice?

Published

Unfortunately I have come to the point that nursing wasn't for me. I've been on a hard road to reach the point to where I have 2 semesters left but I couldn't hold on. I was immensely afraid the closer I got because nursing is overwhelming when you go above patient care. I was struggling just to keep up with balancing skills, medications, charting and studying. I just realized I love taking care of people but nursing is another level as well. I don't want any judgment or criticism for my decision to drop because I feel a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. All I ask is for some advice to other career paths I could go with my current credits. Also other jobs in the hospital like a patient care technician. Thank you.

Options that I can think of, at least in the medical field, would be as follows:

Radiology /CT/MRI Tech

Ultrasonographer

Pharmacy Tech

Med-Tech/Forensic Scientist

Medical Assistant

Medical Biller

Phlebotomist

Occupational/Physical Therapist (including

assistants)

RT ... well, this one's debatable ... ;)

Lift Team

Rock Star

Celebrity

Seriously though, I do really commend you for that ballsy move. I don't think I'll be able to

pull that off!

Best Wishes

Nope... it's an illusion that the kind of nursing you do in school clinicals is the only kind of nursing that is out there. You could be a school nurse, for example. They deal with vaccination/health records and when to call the parents to pick the kid up vs when to call 911, etc. Big difference from med surg. Home health... they have a lot of home health jobs where you stay with the same patient for a full 8 hour shift (private duty home health). You would really get to know that one patient and it would be nothing like the chaos of hospital nursing. Think about it once more.

No judgement if you still don't want to do it... but just know that there are lots of nursing jobs that are totally different from what you have been doing in clinicals.

You can always change your mind back.

Good luck!

No judgment here at all, I was in your position actually! I was in nursing school for two semesters (one year), realized I hated it, and left myself. Good for you that you were able to realize what you don't want- why waste all that time and money only to remain unhappy?

I'm now in school for respiratory therapy. I love it! I'm starting the second year of the program tomorrow, actually- nine more months to go and I'll be done! Have you thought about respiratory? It's similar to nursing in some ways, but you are only responsible for one area of the patient's care rather than the patient as a whole. I find this to be less stressful and easier to manage. RT's have a pretty wide scope of practice and the pay is pretty good in most parts of the country. Another thing that I like about respiratory is that you will travel around various floors/areas of the hospital and see a lot of patients throughout your shift. This differs from nursing as usually nurses will remain in one floor/department for the entire shift and be stuck with the same handful of patients all day.

Respiratory is so underrated and is a great field always in demand! It's also continuing to grow, and that's very exciting to be a part of !
