Driving and Travel Assignments

Hey Guys!! I have a question. I want to take a travel assignment in a couple of months. I want to travel to California and I live on the east coast (Georgia). I would love to get around in Cali, but I dont want to drive my car to Cali (I have a 1998 Toyota Corolla). The agency I have been talking to offers discounts on rentals but I think it is only like 10% or something. Do you guys know of any agnecies that provide a car or you can do leases through them or something? Thanks!!!

Without a second driver, no way would I go it alone and also, why put all those miles on the car when I can totally get back all the expense of shipping and not be burned out right before an assignment starts or ends? I just want to get there. If I wanted to go sightseeing I would go on a train, a bus or a plane. I wouldn't be driving where I'd be exhausted. I can't drive more than 8 hours a day and that hammers me good!

I guess to each its own. I love the travel part of being a travel nurse, to me getting there is half the adventure. I've been doing it now for 14 years and the only time I didn't drive was when I went to Nome Alaska and had to fly. Yes I do take a second driver with me at times, but I don't mind being by myself either. It energizes me and gets me ready for whats to come. I can easily drive 12 hours without problem though, while I know others can not. As for the miles put on my car, I write them off at the end of the year.

bagladyrn,

Your right about those authors LOL!:chuckle Have you ever heard any of the Harry Potter books on CD. The guy who reads it has a great voice and does great voice interpatations. I love listening to him. I've caught myself laughing out loud while listening. The Cracker Barrel exchange is great too. Where are you driving to next??

To me, I have gone on assignments but just want to get from point A to B.

Curious. How do you get back all the expenses of shipping?

Putting in a few more good words for driving! SInce I travel with my dog flying is not an option. (non heated airconditioned cargo bays are not for my 80 pound sweetie).

I have nevere really thought too much about the very find safety precautions because of my dog. I did stop once at a motel that was a big stopover for truckers. I recall one of them coming up to talk to me, very friendly, not at all threatening, and then backing waaay off saying, "Well, thats a biiiiig dog there"... :)

I do not however, drive at night. At times, I will leave early early, but will not drive say past 8 pm.

Also if you will be driving, lookinto "trip rewards" and other hotel discounts. They really add up and save.

The driving is one of my favorite parts too! I try to allow an extra day in my planning when possible to allow time to stop and sightsee or just veer off onto side roads to explore - Did you know there's actually an "Extraterrestrial Highway" in Nevada?

I'll have to check out the Harry Potter audiobooks too. One audiobook I'd recommend, but NOT while driving is the autobiography of Christopher Reeve. He narrated it himself and you can hear him pacing his speech to the respirator. I made the mistake of listening to it while driving and had to pull over to the side of the road to get the tears under control!

I don't know yet when my next trip will be (I may extend here again) but I'll be heading back east at some point to somewhere near where my daughter-in-law will be in GA. My son will be deployed later this year and I'm going to try for a contract close to her so I can help out with my granddaughter. In the meantime though I'll be doing lots of side trips from here - what my son used to refer to as "getting lost on purpose" - following the roads just to see where they go.
