Drexel ACE Spring 2017

Published

Hey,

The priority deadline is today, but there is not even an option to select for the Spring cohort. Only 2016 Fall is available..

I submitted my completed app on August 16th and received my decision on August 30th, so about 2 weeks.

My stats are a little messy:

Undergrad Minor: Biology

Undergrad GPA: 3.3

Pre-req GPA: 3.8

I submitted my app with all of my pre-reqs completed except for one that was in session, but I have since finished it.

Hi, congrats to everyone who was accepted! Has a Facebook group been created for the Spring 2017? I wasn't able to find one but would love to chat with prospective students!

A Facebook group was created recently "Drexel Ace Spring 2017". It has only about 4 members so far. Search for it. We should all join and connect :)

I guess I was rejected since my portal states my decision can't be viewed online and an official letter will be mailed. 🙁

@lindsr12 you should apply to the fall 2017 cohort!

Hello all!

I am in the Fall 2016 Cohort with the "new curriculum" and I just finished Q1 but they're still making changes for you guys as well. I really just want to caution you to be aware that this program is very disorganized in a way that will be detrimental to your learning. You do have time within the first few weeks of the semester to get out of the program (without financial repercussions or having W's on your transcript). They assured us that the program was only rocky because it was a new curriculum but the disorganization and lack of keeping students first clearly runs deep. Please think and choose carefully and if it doesn't feel like the right choice, do what is best for you! Good luck!

@bjl56, can you be more specific about what you don't like about the program/ how it's disorganized?

The disorganization started in lab. We have a 6 hour lab where we go around to different professors kind of like "stations" and we learn skills/concepts. But the problem is each professor teaches differently (they're adjunct, mostly retired and they just do their own thing) so more often than not, we left lab completely confused. Although lab was 6 hours long, we still felt as if we didn't have enough time to practice our skills because most of the time, we didn't. We are tested in the form of a pass/fail lab checkout so learning these skills is vital to continuing in the program. Often times, supplies were limited or the room wasn't set up properly, so that took teaching/practice time away as well. Also during lab there were several groups in one room most of the time so it made it a little difficult to hear.

This year they created a Medication Principles aka Med Math course because of those who previously struggled when the medication portion was integrated into another class. This class was the most disorganized of all because at one point, it was 60+ students in one class room split into groups with multiple different professors struggling to hear and practice skills in a 2 hour period, with no time to practice and the next week, it was on to the next skill. Med administration was another skill that we had to be competent to be tested on on a pass/fail level. In addition, this is the class with the infamous math test that has to be passed with a 95%. This is assessed through an ATI exam which is 25 questions so that's only one wrong (the test is not really a big deal, but we didn't get the list of what to study until a week before the test).

The program is very large (i'm 11 month, i don't know exactly how many students but it's enough that we're split into 3 sections). Each section has a different schedule and different professors. As a result, each section is graded differently because each professor grades their own way and makes their own test. So the level of difficulty is up to the professor. This quarter some students had an "easy" time while others were buried in the books which is unfair because we are all in the same program.

We also had clinical the first week of classes and we got our clinical assignments about a week or two before the program started. They do not care about the distance or how you get there, they're not going to change your location and you can't request one. Many students didn't even have their uniforms yet because the uniform companies that they told us to order from, took weeks and weeks to send scrub tops with simple logos. There are times (in class) when the professor is calling/texting the chair of the course, to make decisions and figure things out. The professors really can't make any decisions without the chair so sometimes we were waiting for days and weeks for simple answers.

Lastly, I would say that they keep saying this program is "intense" it's not imo. It's intensely disorganized, but if you are coming in with a science background, solid study habits and time management skills and patience you will do just fine.

Thanks for that detailed analysis bjl56. So two questions:

Is it worth it?

Are you going to stay in the program?

Hey bjl56, can we get an update on how you're doing and how the program is so far? The Spring cohort will be starting soon.

Thanks, and I appreciate your feedback!
