dress codes

Specialties Operating Room

:o can you believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my hospital has always had a dress code. now they are changing the policy and it now states that all staff has to wear white leather shoes!!! or all black leather shoes. i understand that for the floor nurses and staff. i work in the or. i was wearing the calzurio clogs, they are very comfortable for me. granted i was wearing the hot pink ones. so being the good rn, i ordered white leather clogs. they look very nice ( i know that won't last). but they aren't comfortable.

does anyone one else in an or has such a dress code? we are also not supposed to wear any jewerly, except a watch and wedding ring. no earrings unless they are covered and no necklaces. we are required to wear socks and as stated "foundation garments" that don't show thru clothes. just venting here, but would like to hear from others.

thanks

The ortho surgeons requires that the nurses wear the shoe covers.

I wear the shoe covers all the time because the vascular cases get messy. And i change as needed.

White shouldn't be a requirement anywhere, the Betadine and Duraprep cause stains that don't always come off, and it's not as noticeable on the dark shoes.

Our big requirement for our OR is 1) No flip-flops (yes someone tried this back in June, thought it was OK as long as you had shoe covers on!) and 2) no canvas.

We also have to wear a scrub jacket and our namebadge whenever we leave the dept. I wear badge IN the dept hanging off of my bottom pocket on my shirt, because i don't want it to hurt a pt., yet i hold it up when i introduce myself to them (i do that before i scrub). Nambadge goes IN the pocket before scrubbing, so that it isn't pressed agaist the gown.

And something else i don't understand is one other OR i got to go to, a few of the nurses had their pants rolled up to their knees, yet did not have socks on. We're not allowed to do that either.

I remember when the nurses, females that is, had to wear nylons and had to tie the bottom of the scrub pants to prevent "follicle" fall-out! I started to watch "Coma" the other night and the OR scene at the beginning is what I remember when I first started years ago. SCARY! Mike
