Paging OR team
Believe it or not...I have just been asked by the OR manager to sit on a team with the Anes. MDs to combat this very problem. I have worked in 2 other ORs and this one is the only one where we have to play hide and seek with the CRNA's.

Paging OR team
Oh yea that is typical for where I work in the south....I usually take my patient to the room...If the CRNA isn't around, I page the MD. I don't let that delay my case. A few of the CRNA's take breaks between every and I mean every case. They have to go pee then...It is terrible. I have to find anesthesia for my case. Then I have to find the surgeon and the PA for my case. at the end of every case I have to make 4 telephone calls....it is unreal!!! I have asked for a secretary...LOL :rotfl:

Methodist Hospital in Oak Ridge
well i work at mmc in oak ridge. i am a rn not lpn. but since this is a union hospital it is supposed to have higher payrates. i work 12hrs on evening shift and my shift diff is $2.75/hour. i am also topped out with pay because i have over 12 years experience. so i make over $21.00/hr. i am thinking that lpns make in the $12-14 range. hope this helps

Scrub clothes vending machines
:melody: i work in a hospital that has the scrubavail machine. we only get 2 sets of scrubs before we run out of credit...i really don't have a complaint except when they run out of my size and i have the wear the next size up...i wear a small... anyway the machine takes 30 seconds to give you the scrubs. not too bad really once you get used to putting the dirty ones back in...lol i have forgotten mine many times when we first got the machine... we have the same deal as you, with the sign out sheets for reps and stuff. and yes people wear them home and bring them back. but there are ways to cheat the machine. plus there are times when the machine doesn't register your deposit and you lose a credit. granny7:rolleyes:

Calling family after surgery
I guess I am very lucky. Where I work, the surgeons come out and speak with the family. I call the family to the consultation room and the surgeon talks to them. I also call the family at the start of every case and let them know the patient is in the OR and surgery has started. Our Docs are very good about speaking with the families. If they forget, which they do, the volunteer pages them.

Have you worked outside the OR?
been in the OR since graduating college. Before I became a nurse I was an aide in home health for 10 years. Thought that was what I wanted to do after becoming a RN. But once I walked into the OR, Hello Nurse!!! that was it for me. Even now, I do suffer from burnout and even traveled as a OR RN for about a year. I love what I do.

Getting Early Experience
i did my transistion in nursing school in the or. then i was hired as a float, i worked only in the or and i bid and got a job there after just a few weeks. they train their own here. i have been in the or since graduating. i love working in the or. the only thing is the management in my hospital :angryfire ! back when i was a new nurse, i had 3 months circulating orientation and 3 months scrubbing orientation. now the newbies get all circulating orientation. i think that is a shame. be sure to ask about the response time to being on call. at first it was 20 minutes now it is 30 minutes. so a lot of nurses can't work in the or because they live too far away.

dress codes
wow purple clogs....i had the hot pink ones and loved them!!!!! no one in the or is allowed to wear a necklace!!!! i used to wear one that my dear hubby got me. earrings are allowed if you cover them with your hat. well i can't hear with my ears covered so now i don't wear my earrings. so now i only wear jewerly on weekends. as for rings, i had never worn them to work. the hospital administration has deemed that all staff including the or wear either white or black leather shoes!!!!!! i don't have a problem with not wearing my jewelry. i have a problem with the shoe issue. i bought a pair of white leather clogs from clogsonline...by the way a great place to find clogs. but the leather clogs are heavier than the calzuiro clogs and not as comfortable. once they get stained with blood and betadine they sure won't be as pretty. i don't wear shoe covers as i personally find them hazardous. i am just trying to find out what other people who work in the or wear on their feet and does the administration have a problem with it?

dress codes
i remember when i started in the or we had to wear white lab coats when ever we left the dept. i thought it looked professional. now we don't have to. but my real problem is that the new dress code has dictated the material our shoes should be made from!!!! and the color!!!!! i could wear the shoe covers but i have a real small foot...size 5. and the shoe covers the hospitals supplies are way too big!!! i have also found the shoe covers to be a hazard. they are slippery, they can cause a fall. no one at my hospital changes shoe covers. they look so nasty. i can at least wipe my shoes off and i do clean them before i leave the dept. i don't want to scare anyone with betadine splashed on my shoes. i am a circulator most of the time. i like the calzurio clogs. they are autoclave safe and for me very comfortable. i just want to find documentation that i can take to admistration to back up my request to examine the dress code and question how it should be addressed in the or vs the rest of the house. thanks:saint:

dress codes
Thanks for the reply. I agree that dress codes in the OR are like the bottom of any priority list. I have had patients and visitors alike comment on my Hot Pink shoes, all positive comments. I really don't have a problem with the rest of the dress code. I have always been a person to shy away from senseless confrontation. By the way. I wear Dansko clogs to work. They are so expensive that I don't want to invest $100 in a white pair to wear in the OR. Are there any other comments??? pro or con? Also I was told by a manager that US Nursing Standards call for white leather shoes?

dress codes
can you believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my hospital has always had a dress code. now they are changing the policy and it now states that all staff has to wear white leather shoes!!! or all black leather shoes. i understand that for the floor nurses and staff. i work in the or. i was wearing the calzurio clogs, they are very comfortable for me. granted i was wearing the hot pink ones. so being the good rn, i ordered white leather clogs. they look very nice ( i know that won't last). but they aren't comfortable. does anyone one else in an or has such a dress code? we are also not supposed to wear any jewerly, except a watch and wedding ring. no earrings unless they are covered and no necklaces. we are required to wear socks and as stated "foundation garments" that don't show thru clothes. just venting here, but would like to hear from others. thanks
