Double Majoring in Biology/Nursing?

Published

Would it be possible to double-major in nursing and biology? Do I need to contact the schools I'm looking at and see if it'd be possible by them? I'd like to double-major and get my BSN and BS in Biology at the same time. I'm hoping to attend WSU.

Thanks all of you in advance!

Also, I'll have all my pre-reqs done, etcetc. :yeah:

You can probably find out this information by researching the school catalog online. But it would be quicker to just call an advisor at the school and ask. Most schools that I have looked at allow a double major. If it is not done at the school you wish to attend, you can probably have biology as your minor.

Specializes in PACU.

I think it'd be impossible to do at WSU. The nursing department is based out of Spokane with satellites throughout the state, while I think the Biology major is only offered on the Pullman campus. That's not to mention the fact that it would be incredibly trying academically and likely impossible to work out schedule wise. If you're intent on earning both degrees I recommend doing the BSN first then earning the BS in Biology later.

Why do you want both a BSN and a BS in Biology? The best course of action for you varies depending upon your long term goals.

Actually, there's a Biology Major at the WSUV campus as well (I live in Vancouver). It looks like it's pending at Spokane (I just went and looked it up) so it would be possible...

I'd like to go into nursing right now since it's best for my family and for myself, but in the end, eventually, I would like to go to veterinary school. (Weird mix, right?) Since I get covered with FA (financial aid) right now, it's just more plausible for me to attempt a double-major, if I can. I'm not sure - I need to contact them. Thanks for everyone's comments and advice! :heartbeat

I'd recommend working on the biology before the nursing as you might not be able to do both at the same time due to the strange ways nursing schools often schedule classes. Another reason for this is that you may not be allowed to sit for the NCLEX until graduation, so finishing up all your nursing classes right before graduation would be best. Additionally, after graduation you will probably not qualify for financial aid other than loans - so make your first degree(s) count!
