Dosage site

My daughter will be starting at the hospital as a LPN. She has "homework" that includes dosage calculations. I've been out of nursing school for 15 years. She's been out for 1 year and is having problems remembering dosages.

Anyone know a good site that will allow a nurse to put in crucial numbers and come up with an answer?

Here's a couple of examples:

Order: Pronestyl 250 mg IV in 500cc D5W at 4mg/hr. What is the flow rate in ml/hr?

Order: Dobutamine 250mg IV in 250ml D5W to infuse at 5mcg/kg/min. The patient weighs 85 kgs.

I just can't remember how to set these up.

Any help on pointing us to a good site would be greatly appreciated..........jan

Hi, I don't have site you can go to but this is how I would figure out these questions:

the pronestyl one:

ml/hr:500cc/ 250mg x 4mg/hr = 2000/250 = (cancel out the mg) 8ml/hr

I hope this looks right.

The first one was easy to figure out in my head. The concentration is 0.5mg/ml (Divide 250mg by 500ml) and then double the ml/hr. IF it would have been 500mg in 500ml the concentration would have been 1mg/ml and the rate 4 ml/hr.

The second poses a problem to me becasue it's not a concentration of dobutamine I am familiar with. If I'm not mistaken the standard mix is either 400mg in 250ml which yields 1600mcg/ml. So, this one I would have to get out the calculator for. :rotfl:

I have an excellent dosage calculations book, from a required ADN class-

"Dosage Calculations; 6th edition" by Gloria D. Pickar. ISBN #0-7668-0504-2

it comes with a CD, too....it's from Delmar Press
