Don't want to give up!!!

Hi all,

I have been going to college for 4 years now. I was put on the waiting list for 2 years. Finally, I got into the nursing program, I pass nursing I, but during nursing 2, my son got really sick, so I failed. I had to wait for a year to get back in, which I did, but I didn't pass it again. I took all of the my co, and re-classes already, I just need those 4 nursing classes. I have checked out all of the school around my area, and even out of state (1 hours drive), they're all full and the waiting list is to 2010. There's only one school that will accept in spring 08, i was really happy about that, but still I have to wait for 6 months. The head of the nursing department, said that "what made you think that you will pass this time with us, you tried twice over the other school," she also told me that nursing isn't something for me. I was in tears in my car after that. I have spend alot of time in this program. I'm confused and want to give up, but at the same time, I don't because I only have to take thoses nursing classes. I am really hurt from her comments. Or maybe nursing isn't for me.......................:o

I'm sorry to hear about your school problems. Nursing school is tough, and it's unlike anything I've ever been through before. The comments that lady told you are so like so many school counselors and administrators: they are rude, ruthless, and uncaring. They give poor advice and hurt students. The can truly be a cold group to deal with. So, you have to do what you feel is best for you, not what is best for some lady who probably is a bitter person. If you really want to be a nurse, then I say do whatever you have to do to reach your goals. If that means having to wait a bit, or hire a tutor to help you get through the tough times, then that is what you have to do. I say follow your dreams.

There was a lady in my class who was told the same thing. She failed a course and when she came back to reapply they told her she was probably not nursing material. Well, she is now a nurse.

Brush it off, she was rude and probably miserable. Sometimes I think they act like this in nursing school, so we get a head start dealing with it in our careers. If your that determined, after already going through it once or twice, you really must be passionate about it.

Good luck!!

I am truly sorry about your situation; however, I understand the schools point of view and don't think they were being cold or careless toward you at all. You have to try and understand the schools point of view -- there are many many many applicants across the country awaiting a slot in a nursing school, and a school would rather grant them individuals a position in their School of Nursing over an individual who has failed the same nursing class twice. I am not saying it is right nor wrong, but I can empathize with both sides.

During our orientation into our accelerated BSN program, the dean specifically said "...do well in your classes the first time around. You are in nursing school and we understand life throws curve balls at you, but you must learn to deal with life and do well in school, because if you fail a class and there is no room the following semester for you to retake the class, we will not readmit you..." I didn't think that was cold at all. We had one girl fail already (over skills testing) and she was complaining that she probably will not get a spot next semester to continue on with our school, and I empathize with her and feel bad that she will not continue with us... however, another student who is waiting to get in should not continue to wait because a student who failed is taking up another slot.

I really hope the best for you and hopefully you find a school that will admit you! Don't by any means think you are not nursing material though. It is unfortunate that you failed that same class twice and before you are readmitted, I would figure out where you went wrong and how you can improve your study skills. Good luck! :)

Let me tell you a little story that I hope may help...

It was a nightmare trying to get into nursing school. Even with another college degree, my grades were not top notch. I spent 2 years retaking courses and visting countless number of community colleges and universities. I had a simliar situation happen to me at a school. I believe I cried as well. But I just crossed that school off my list and kept knocking on doors and making phone calls. I also cried when I finally did get in to a different school and didn't pass the first semester. Like you, I had some personal issues outside of nursing school that interfered with school. Fortunately they let me back in. I am curretnly have the second highest grade in my class and 2 semesters left to go. Point is- if you want to do this you will find a way. A door will open for you if you keep knocking. Please don't give up because someone else tells you to.
