Don't think Nursing is for me

Published

I am in my first semester of a diploma program. So far, it's been fine. I am not failing anything. All my grades are in the 90s. However, I don't feel interested by it. I like it, but not passionate about it. I am thinking about transferring to the local university. I either want to go into biology or history. I just think that if I am not too keen on nursing now, I'll wind up hating it late. Nursing is a profession where you need to be passionate about. I feel as if I continue and do finish the program, I wouldn't be the best nurse I can be because my heart will not be in it.

I just don't want to jump the gun and make a mistake. I need to talk to my dad about it since he pays for my college. I am worried that he'll be upset because I am changing my mind but at the same time, I think he'll understand.

Quite untrue.

I know a great many fine nurses who are not at all passionate about nursing. They are professionals who do their jobs to the best of their ability in exchange for compensation.

Nursing is a job/vocation/profession/trade, not a mission/calling/ministry. That's not to say that it can't be those latter things but it needn't be.

OH PLEEZE - the thread is veering off into the "passion versus salary" territory - that's like arguing about religion or politics. No one ever changes their mind - it's all rhetoric.

As the (very ancient) mom of two vocationally successful offspring, I want to throw this out there.... The key in any field is to be sure that your 'higher education' is focused on achieving a skill as well as an education. That's the major flaw in liberal arts - it doesn't result in a skill that is valuable to employers in this economy. Basically, what will someone pay you to do??

There are many skill sets that are very attractive in today's job market - it just takes a little exploration to find them. For instance - one young lady I know reveived a bachelors degree in airport management... and had multiple offers before she even graduated. IT-related career fields are becoming hot again. Even in the performing arts, the graduates with technical (costume design, lighting, scenic design, etc) degrees are finding work. Construction management is pretty hot in my area of the country - no one can afford to buy a new house, so everyone's remodeling. Law enforcement specialties, including forensic sciences are very employable. And the list goes on.

If the OP, or anyone else, is just not interested in nursing - then don't go there! Life is too short to have to drag yourself to a job that just drains the life out of you.
