Don't know if I'm good enough

Let me just start off by saying thank you for reading my story/ rant. It means a lot to know that someone actually cares.

Well, here's my story. I moved to Asia right after I finished middle school. I was suppose to go to an American International school right when I came there but, my parents had money problems so they told me to wait a couple years. After 2 years I still wasn't able to go to school. I got tired of waiting but I couldn't do anything about it cause I was only 16. I'm 18 now and I don't feel like waiting anymore. I've decided that I wanted to be a nurse mainly because I love helping people. My aunt has agreed to let me stay with her in Texas while I go to college, but the thing is I'm so scared, no terrified because I've been sheltered my entire life so I don't even know if I can take care of myself. Secondly, I have to learn how to drive so that I can get my license, study to get my GED (while working part time), take my general classes at a community college, go to nursing school (That's if I can get into nursing school), then pay off my own student loans. It's going to take a while to do all of this I know that. I just don't know if I'm smart enough for any of this to be honest. I haven't been in school for 4 years so I feel stupid. I don't even know how long my aunt's going to let me stay with her she does have a family of her own. I just don't want to go to nursing school to find out that it's to hard for me and then I'm left with all that debt to pay off. I've heard the pros and cons of becoming a nurse, but there's one that scares me a lot. Is it true that it's hard to find a job as a nurse these days? I've heard quite a lot of people saying that. I don't want all of my hard work to be a waste, so that I could be left debt. I want to be a nurse but, am I good enough for it? Am I smart enough for it? What do you guys think I should do? Thanks again for reading my story/rant

Whew! Can I suggest some paragraph breaks??? It's very difficult to read a "wall of text".

If I am understanding your situation correctly, you are an American citizen, right? But - due to family circumstances - you did not graduate HS so you feel as though you are so far behind that it may be impossible to achieve your goal of becoming a nurse. I disagree.

You have a lot going for you. You're young. Based on your writing skills, you are intelligent. You have a supportive family member who is willing to offer you a home while you complete your education. That's a LOT more than many people have.

Take it one step at a time. Get your GED. Get a part-time job to meet your financial needs. Complete your pre-requisites at a Community College where you can pay for low-cost classes as you take them. If you qualify for financial aid, this may cover the cost of your community college courses. You can do this!

Yeah, that is a lot to read. I live in TX & have yet to have a problem getting a job. Are you gonna go straight for your RN (sounds like it) or get your LVN? I don't know where in TX your aunt lives but the job market could be completely different from where I am.

You have a goal (being a nurse) and that's great! That puts you ahead of many 18 year olds who have no clue what they want to do. Now breathe.... And take it step by step. As you mentioned, you still have a few things to do- readjusting to life in the US, learning to drive, getting a GED.

If you search this site, you will see many threads 'is nursing for me?' The advice frequently given is to obtain a CNA license and work as a nurse's aide. You will be helping people and earning money for college, and you will learn more about healthcare and get to see for yourself if you want to pursue a career in healthcare-- whether as an RN or any other role. Good luck :-)

Thank you so much! Your advice means the world to me
