I was at an OB clinical rotation watching colposcopy procedures. What is the name of the thick golden brown liquid (begins with M) that the physician put on the biopsy site with a cotton swab to stop bleeding? I wrote it down on my clipboard, but it got wet and now I can't read it. Help!

Mercurochrome?
Doesn't get much use these days.

Does it have a weird chemical smell? This sounds like tincture of benzoin; the M might come from a brand name that your facility uses.

I just had one not too long ago and they used iodine--I think. Might have been povidone like they use in the OR...can't remember.
I think it was something like mosselles? She said it was used to stop the bleeding- does Mercurochrome or benzoin do that? I thought they were just to kill bacteria?
It definitely had a strong chemical smell and had an iodine metallic sheen to the golden brown.

You are close. It's called Monsel's solution.

Ah, nice find, sirI.
I have heard of and have seen this used, however, nobody in this area has referred to it as "Monsel's".

I've used this solution when performing colposcopies. Works nicely, but like the article pointed out, can interfere with histology, so one must know when to apply it.
That's it! Thanks so much and that is a terrific website!!!!!
You are welcome.
When i had my colposcopy she told me whe would put on the brown solution--an iodine like solution and then when she irrigated with like saline or something any areas with abnormal cells would stay brown the rest would come right off....not used just to cleanse. ???? Don't know I have been away from women health since 2003.
