Does anybody be able to tell me nursing system differences between Canada and US?? Are there the same kinds of job like EMT or MA in Canada?? Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

I live in Ontario and we have provinces not states. I am an RPN and IVs are within my scope of practice. It can also depend on the facility policy if an RPN can do IVs.

We do not have any coding or billing because we have universal healthcare so no pt billing except for tvs or upgrades to private rooms. We have no MAs just ward clerks. They take a year long program for ward clerking and they do paperwork and ordering supplies.etc.

If you have pt billing do nurses have to keep track of supplies used etc? Thanks for nay info

I don't know about everywhere but every hospital that I've been to the way the nurses keep track of the supplies is the supply room has a computer with a scanner attached and it's basically like when you go to the grocery store. You pick the patients name gather the supplies you need and scan them in. They alo have the option of scanning it to the floor with certain things that can't be billed to patients/insurance companies. The med room also has the same system for getting meds and the computers have a scanner with them that scans the patients bracelet/chart and each med has a bar code on it that is scanned when they are given. This is how they keep track but if you don't scan it in then the patients can't be billed. So it's not perfect but it works.

Cool. Are there restrictions on the use of supplies? I guess you would get pretty used to that system of keeping track. It would have been trickier pre-computer.

Another question. How long is the LPN course?

I am an RPN(registered practical nurse) and I was wondering how the schooling compares.

Restrictions, I don't know. I guess it would vary from facility to facility but I'm guessing not because you have to use as many supplies you need to get the job done.

The LPN program I'm in is 14 months part time. We had six weeks off during summer, two weeks for Christmas, and one week for Spring break, and no Fridays. My school also offers a full time program Mon-Fri had the same holidays off and last 12 months.

Thanks. My RPN was 4 years part time( 2.5 full time). Much different.
