I am very blessed to have landed a job in a dermatology clinic after searching far and wide.
I worked 9 AM to 3 PM on Saturday. I worked 12 PM to 7 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday. Well today I was informed that the manager has decided to pay me $30 per DAY for Saturday and Tuesday. Then only HALF rate for today (Wednesday) because I was "orienting".
The manager thinks this is fair pay....and I really want to keep the job so I don't want to cause conflict. But $30 for 6 hours of work? For 2 days! I did 95% of the work alone they showed me the ropes for ONE HOUR then I was on my own completing laser rejuvenations, chemical peels, and light therapy solo....so I don't think it is fair.
I did not even get to sit down for a break yesterday and to find out that I only got paid $30 is disappointing. Yes, I should be grateful.....but I got paid my full rate at the flu shot clinic just to train at a computer...
Plus, at first they said I'd make $35 an hour....then they dropped it down to $25 because they thought that was more fair since I'm a new grad.
I love the work though...I just think what they are doing is very unprofessional. Or am I wrong?
Thank you all for your help! Happy Thanksgiving by the way. Yes, I am going to confront her on Tuesday about this. Minimum wage here is $8.25...so $30 is unacceptable. She says it's because I was training, but training or not...I gave up my time for the practice. It is a privately own practice. They are all relatives, close friends, etc. working there. So it is pretty shady the way they operate. The business manager is an accountant....yet she gives medical advice to clients??? Kind of crazy. The doctor just stays in his office all day...I've only seen him once. So she calls all the shots. I think it's his wife or sister...not sure yet.
I enjoy the work so far and the other employees are really nice (they did give me fair warning that this woman was "stingy" but I had no idea....)
I will continue working here while looking for another job on the side.
Ugh.....it sucks starting out!
FYI there is a "training wage" provision in the DOL minimum wage guidelines but it applies to people under the age of 20 and must be at least 85% of the current minimum wage. Neither one of these conditions seem to apply to you.
I hate clinics where the doctor's wife, sister, daughter, etc. is the office manager. They look at every penny they save as a penny in their own pocket. One of my neighbors recently quit her job as the insurance clerk at a GI specialist's office because the office manager, his wife, informed her that she would have to start supplying her own pens, highlighters, and markers. A local cardiologist's wife who is also his office manager was famous for inviting all the employees to Christmas dinner at a nice restaurant one year and then telling the waitress to make out seperate checks.
Stay there for the experience but keep looking for something else. Even if you get the pay you were promised her penny pinching ways will make the work environment totally miserable. You will be so busy worrying about how many staples, paperclips, and five cent ball point pens you are using you won't be able to concentrate on your patients.
That's very jacked up! She should honor the amount that was agreed upon. If she want's to give you a small training wage in the future, fine. However, she owes you the amount that was agreed upon for the time you had worked. What a horrible place to work! Don't they care about their reputation?

That BS. Through my orientation I wasn't even an RN yet, I was a GN. I got my FULL pay. I was in orientation for 14 weeks, got all my shift difs, and even got overtime. This clinic sounds shady, I don't even know if I would risk my hard earned RN at this place.
