Do you plan on working while in nursing school?

Published

Right now I work and go to school at night and my husband is a stay-at-home dad. But when I start nursing school - the plan is he's going to have the be the bread winner. That scared the heck out of me!!! :uhoh21:

So are you planning on working while in nursing school - or is someone else going to support you?

I'm a single mom looking at fall '09 before getting into clinicals, so work is definitely on the agenda. Just started at a LTCF to get experience (it's sure not for the big $), and I'll probably work there till I've got a semester of clinicals in and can get on at a hospital that hires nursing students if need be....I'd much rather find a way to not have to work while I was in clinicals so I stand a snowball's chance at passing. It's out there, just up to me to find it............

i wish more nursing school programs were like that. i don't know of any in my area that are. what you said is so true! many degree programs these days have part-time options where you can still work ft while going to school on a pt basis. nursing needs to get with the program, lol.

i agree!

the reading i've done here today has been a real eye-opener for me. i guess i assumed that most nursing programs offered options for those who cannot afford to attend school full-time, especially since so many of us in the 30 years and older crowd are choosing to go into nursing these days.

three community colleges here in alabama have teamed together and developed a "delayed" (part-time) format within their associate degree in nursing curriculum described here:

now students are able to receive their

associate's degree in nursing in

delayed/part-time format. southern

union state community college has

partnered with calhoun community

college and central alabama

community college to offer nursing

courses at a slower pace for those

students wishing to pursue a career in

nursing who may not be able to attend

fulltime. courses are offered in a

hybrid alternative format using

distance education and videostreaming

technology that allows the

student a maximum degree of

flexibility in educational experiences

and may include evening classes and

weekend clinical. students who

pursue a degree in nursing have the

opportunity to work in a variety of

health care settings.
