Do any of the nurses here working 40 hr weeks and going to school, have children? If so, what are your shifts like, and do your kids get off to school in the morning on their own? Thanks

I work full-time nights (five 8 hour shifts per week, plus call) and I am going to grad school part-time (6-7 credits a semester). I have two school aged kids in lot of after school activities, and it gets tiring sometimes. Like others, I have help from my hubby and my mom to help fill in the gaps. I don't know how anyone could do this without help. :)

I did it. But my kids were older. Oldest in college. Youngest in high school. I worked a 36 hour weekend at the hospital and 20 hours a week teaching clinicals. The last semester I worked 36 hrs + 4 days teaching clinicals for two different colleges while working on my MSN. I would not ever advise trying that!

I am currently getting my BSN while working 3 14 hr shifts each week. I have a 2 yr old and a 4yr old, neither in preschool. My husband drops them off at daycare and picks them up on the days I work, otherwise they are home with me. I've learned to study and do homework with them right next to me...its tough but it'll pay off in the end! I have to say no one is allowed in my house because its a complete disaster but something's got to give right?

I work 40 hrs a wk Saturday - Wednesday and I have 4 small children (17mo to 9 yrs old). I am going to school part time, sometime more or less credits a semester. I have been in the RN program for 3 years and am finishing up now. It is hard but can be done. My husband is supposed to go back to school this September. Not sure yet if I am going to try and go back for my BSN at the same time or wait.

I am doing my BSN online and my husband works full time and is in school as well. It's definitely doable. I have found the BSN program to be way easier than nursing school was....probably helps to have some experience under my belt though.... Good luck!

Seems as if the MAIN element in MOST of these success stories is a hubby to help. Anybody a single mom doing it?? *That might just impress and inspire me :)

It was a long time ago but I did so as a single mom. I worked 11p-7a, went to school full time days. Childcare was a combination of relatives and sitters (I will be forever grateful to my ex-MIL who kept my son through his week with chickenpox).

The main thing neglected was sleep - I would actually nap in my car between classes with an arrangement for classmates to come wake me.

This is also an issue of mine. I'm single with a four year old and can't see how I can manage nursing school. One clinical spot is almost 45 miniuts away straight shot. My mother has been my hubby and she has blessed me to finish up a degree in sociology with a minor in substance abuse, but now I have to beging to do it myself.

I'm contemplating taking my pre-reqs for BSN one class at a time while I use my education is medical office to switch from cna to an administration assistant. I'm tired of cna and I don't want to do social human services. By that time my daughter will be 6. My othe two kids will be 19 and 17, yea I bumped my head. Gotta love her, but it does confuse things and make things harder.

I worked 36 hrs a week while in school. My husband was a great support but he is in school and works 45 - 50 hrs a week. We have 2 children both very young. I work most of my hours on the weekend and my husband works during the week. I study after the kids go to bed during the weekdays. My family has no weekends or evenings together, but we know it is temporary.

Thanks to all the responses to my question! I see one common thread. We do what we have to do with the resources we have available. Thanks again.
