Do NP's work under MD's?

Published

I always thought that NP's could practice alone.......they dont need a doc to supervise them, but PA's do. Is this true??? Can NP's practice alone?

Hello,

Good luck at UMASS-Worc. I just graduated with MSN. Studying for my test (end of June). I am SOOO nervous.

Congrats on graduating. So how did you like the program? Do you feel prepared now in your new role as an NP? did you do the acute/critical care track? good luck with studying for your boards. Let me know how it goes. :) Is the test all multiple choice?

Quick question: for those few entirely NP-run clinics out there, is there any need for a collaborative doc at all, whatsoever, or can the NP in this situation run entirely solo with no collaboration with any doc whatsoever?

Really depends upon the state requirements, Noreaster. You need to check the state's BON and see if an NP needs a collaborative practice.

Oh, thanks. So, in other words, there are certain states, where collaborative doc is not needed for a NP to run a completely independant practice? Does anybody know which states allow this?

Exactly, Noreaster,

Excellent artitle from Medscape regarding: Does a physician need to sign charts for the NP? (note the info for Georgia does not apply since Georgia has prescription authority now).

Thanks for info. I see some info about DEAs and about co-signing charts but was specifically wondering about the scenario of if one were to open a practice, with own building, staff, and complete facilities. Which states can this be done in where there is no collaborative physician, whatsoever, no contracts, agreenments with any physician, or anything--just working alone in an office without ever collaborating at all.

There was a lot I didnt like - mainly the clinical portion of the nursing section was not great - which is not good for us direct-entry w/no nursing experience - but I think same complaints everywhere. I feel prepared to prepare for the role - wish I had another year to focus on the clinical learning now that all the academic stuff is over. Mind you - I am not claiming that nursing or np only need the clinical stuff (I agree that is what separates a "service" profession from "professional"), but wish I had more and better clinical stuff.

I am in the Family NP program. Test is all multiple choice. For AANP and ANCC (sp?) 4 part questions. Another certifying body has 3 question format for Women's NP and Pedi (I think). Test seems much more straightforward and based on knowledge, not "nursing interventions" than NCLEX, but SO MUCH to learn :-)

2 more weeks.
