Do your non-nursing people know what nurses do?

Published

Hello Everyone!!!! Well I am just wondering if anyone could share their thoughts or experiences on this subject. I'll share mine..

My cousin, he's a sophmore and pre-med, really thinks nurses do only what CNA's do and that doctors do what nurses actually do. He thinks doctors iniciate IV's, change fluids and what not, place foley caths, and stuff like that.. A friend of mine thinks we hug, change diapers, and wait on doctors.. Now another friend of mine argued a basic really dumb fact about a disease, she's a receptionists at an insurance company, and said, "well how would you know anything about it-you're just studying to be a nurse!" Yeah as a nurse you don't have to know anything about diabetes?!?!?!? I think its so frustrating you hear stuff like this all the time and I notice it more and more on TV and I guess just in general.

So whats everyone elses thoughts?

I thought for a long time that all nurses did was the hug thing...until I had post-partum depression in the hospital and those nurse were my strength. When I saw what nurses actually do I realized I wanted to be one. I talked them UP on a hospital rating phone survey...and I brought them a bag of candy. I felt that anyone which could put up with crazy me for five days deserved chocolate at least.

Awww I love your story! I have to say when I had my son I already planned on nursing but the nurses were so wonderful I sent them a card and called the hospital and let them know how wonderful my nurses were :) It definately solidified my decision :)

I haven't heard a lot of that, but I have heard alot about how Im in school and it must be so easy...My husband seriously thinks all I do is sit around on the computer (nevermind taking ATI quizzes, creating my own study materials, etc, etc). He thinks nursing school is so easy lol.

My husband thinks the same! I've been working full time and going to school full time while completing my prerequisites, and now that I'm starting nursing school in the fall, I may have to drop down to part time. But anytime I mention that to him, he goes "you've been doing both full time for two years, you can keep doing it, just study harder". He really doesn't get it.
