Do you need business insurance to work as a community nurse?

Published

I am in my final year looking at first posts and I love community nursing. However, I will only be 21 and insuring a car with business insurance might be too pricey for me as it is expensive fully comp alone.

I'm hoping somebody will shed some wisdom on this and whether it's needed and if there are enhancements/help with this?

If not I will more than happily work as a staff nurse in a hospital.

Thanks! x

If using the car for work then you will need to declare it. If you don't and you have an accident and need to make a claim they will try and get out of paying if you hadn't declared using it for work. I know I was asked if I was using the car for work and just told them it was to and fro.

You technically won't be insured if you are using your car for business purposes. Our uni told us to talk to our insurers and tell them what we would be doing to see how they would cover it. If you aren't actually being paid for the work I wonder if that still be classed as "work"

I'd just call your insurers and see what they say, or have a read through the small print in your contract and it may give you some more information.

If community nursing is your thing and the car is the problem, then consider moving to a city where the car is not needed. I worked district in London for a few years, by bicycle, and for some areas, its pretty much expected as a car would be a hindrance.

I'm out of date with the politics now, I know the PCTs have been re-invented again, but go to 'NHS Jobs' and search areas such as Ealing, Kensington and Chelsea, Camden, Brent, Southwark, Wandsworth, Westminster, etc and see what transpires!

yes you will need class 1 business insurance as thisallowes you to travel between multiple places of work.

class 1 is rarely much more expensive than the same mileage on SDP and commuting and in some cases is actually cheaper , go and speak to the meerkats or the robot and see what they can come out with
