Do you love/hate your profession?

Published

I have read articles, posts, opinions, etc. that being a nurse is difficult, unappreciated, awful, horrid, etc. I have read many things that a nurse indicates that she wished she had never entered the nursing profession.

My questions to you current nurses: Do you wish you weren't a nurse? Do you hate the job(I mean as a whole not just the job itself. Take into account your working conditions, difficult co-workers, managers, etc.)? Where have you ended up (hospital, research, etc.)? Would work in a hospital right now?

You don't have to answer all my questions. I've become afraid to pursue a nursing degree due to all the negative feedback I have seen. I've seen posts about nurses leaving the profession in droves and that there is no nursing shortage. I am still going to pursue the degree. The worst that can happen is that I won't like it. I will just do something else if I absolutely can't stand it. It's my dream to work mother/baby. I welcome all feedback good and bad! :)

I LOVE being a nurse. I don't always like my job or have terrific days, but I wouldn't trade being a nurse for anything. I love being able to help people on a real and practical level. It makes me happy to be there for people when they are in need, stressed and worried--or in pain. Not only can I be there for them in a personal way, I can also use my skills from my education, experience, etc to REALLY help them get better. That is job satisfaction. Nursing is not for everybody. You can't look at these boards to make your decision. You have to really search inside to find your answer. Good luck to you.

Well said!!

NO... I HATE IT!! I regret ever gong to school for it.. nursing makes me miserable, I hate work and it pours over into my personal life. I'm trying so hard to get through each day I work, that I'm not enjoying & living life. I'm going back to school for health/nutrition or bio/animals... something I really want to do. I am the type of person who needs to enjoy my job, or atleast not detest it!

All that being said, you are an individual & only you can decide if nursing is right for you... many people love it, and many peeps hate it. But, if you don't give it a chance you'll always wonder if nursing was for you. Your call...

Best of luck deciding;)

hi there well i started working as a cna to see if i really like it then after one year as a cna i decided to become a nurse i love it. To be successfull in any thing you have to like it and in nursing u need to love people and care for them and handle the work load and patience is a must.Wishing you but the best, so take your time and try working as a nurse assistant or a patient care tech and see how u like it

I am not a nurse, I am a NA, but yes, I love my job. It is such a blessing to find something that fits so well. I can't imagine doing this if I did not like it, though, there is just so much going on. It could be overwhelming if there was not the benefit of feeling good about what I am doing.

But even the best fit has its difficulties: I do find home-health BORING to distraction~ and there again, if it were not for the special patients, I'd go crazy. LTC is so iffy, with under staffing and marginal care in some places. Again, it is the patients that keep you coming back, it could not be the money! Hospitals, never have done that, looks great though, not the 15 heavy lift patients with diapers, but still the people interaction and care.

As for you nurses, I know that the stresses are far greater, and the responsibilities are, well, sometimes pretty scary. You really have to like what you are doing!
