I have been a nurse since 2006. However, I worked only for two years, right after graduation. I took a break to raise my kids. Now that I am ready to get back in track, I am finding myself kind of lost. I have been out of practice for about six years now. Even though I have an active license, I did not practice nursing. I want to know if I need to take a refresher's course, or NCLEX all over again? Or may be nothing! Could anybody help me out?

Welcome to AN! The largest online nursing community!
The job market has changed since you left. There are plenty of nurses out there right now looking for work. Most facilities want a refresher if you have not been actively nursing for 3 years. Many facilities are hiring BSN grads only.
Good Luck!

YES...I would suggest that you take a refresher course perhaps at your local community college. I know that is what we have in our community. Preferably look for one with a clinical component. This will also show your dedication to the profession as you will definitely want to put this class on you resume.
No on the NCLEX..no need and if you are already registered to practice who is going to let you sit for the exam for practice. A current NCLEX review book would also be a good idea to get you back into the groove!
Thank you for replying. This is most helpful. Could you tell me what is the time frame that a refresher course is valid, or valuable? I mean, if I finish the course in appx. October 2014, will I still have a chance to be hired around next summer? How would you like it if you had to hire me?

I took a RN refresher after I was out of the workforce with my kids. I did mine through South Dakota State University (I am in NY). It was excellent, IMO. There was an online portion, and then you did the clinical portion closer to home.
When my kids got a little older, I started sending out resumes for per diem work. I hadn't been getting any bites on my resume. Immediately after I finished up the refresher, I got a job!

You may want to check with your BON to see if your license is still valid. My state has a practice requirement, and nurses who don't work enough hours have to take a refresher course to keep their license.
If this is the situation, then it sounds like I better think about a BSN too. However, I can't join work until next year. Now should I, or could I, get my BSN, then take the refresher course right before joining the work!
