Do hospitals hire NEW NURSE GRADS?

I'm a pre- nursing student and one of my classmates really scared me yesterday. She told me that when we finish the ADN program, noone would hire us. Is this true??? And someone else tells me it's not true that hospitals love to hire new grads. I don't know who to believe, and i don't want to go through all that hard work if I wont get hired.

I already spent almost a year in Medical Assisting school, and never got hired, so i don't want the same thing to happen. And if this is true, why do hospitals "love" to hire new nurses?

thanks in advance!

I'll second MirandaRN's post. I just graduated in June of 07 and had a job offer in January, months before graduation. I had already researched which hospital I was most interested in, and over the December break, they posted a notice online that they were now accepting applications for summer grads (GNs) and also internships for senior nursing students. I was called the day after I submitted my application and an interview set up in early January.

The portfolio was a great idea -- in fact at our school it was a requirement our senior year to have a portfolio made - resume, letters of reference, outstanding examples of course work, teaching presentations, care plans, etc. Many students do not have portfolios and having one can only be a bonus. Both the HR manager and the nurse manager were very impressed by this. It certainly can't hurt.

I'd say at least 90% of my class had jobs lined up before graduation, the other 10% were just undecided which way to go or wanted to take boards first.

do not take advice from people with no more experience than you on the topic at hand. Sounds like Chicken Little.

We love new grads. Most hospitals hire new grads, but may limit the number so that the nursing units have a balance of mature/new nurses. If you have trouble in your state, whereever that is, come to TEXAS!
