Do you give chemo in your HH agency??

Published

Hi,

New to HH. Switching from tele/icu step down unit. Our agany has given chemo to several kids...when I worked in the hospital only oncology nurses would do this...so I am curious if other agencies are doing this.

Thanking you in advance.....

The agencies that I have worked with were lucky if they had any nurses who were qualified to do IV therapy in the home, much less chemo. None of them did any chemo. IV therapy nurses came from other agencies to handle IVs.

Well I have read some of the previous posts on here concerning this. Seems like there are some on both sides of the fence. I did give it today BUT I had my supervisor come with. I think if this is the direction docs are going to go, we need to get some training and polices in place. I am going to push for it in our office! Thanks for reading....

Yes, our agency does give chemo txs.. we have had several patients who have needed home chemo. :)

I am also considering HH and now do ICU stepdown/tele. I asked in my interview about chemo, and was told I wouldn't be doing any. How do you like HH? I thought that you could give me a great viewpoint on HH nursing versus PCU/tele nursing, Thanks !

After talking with our education lady...I find out that the chemo certification is a JACHO standard. She will be looking into pulling something together to make us feel a little more comfortable/prepared for this new trend. As far as HH goes...it is a whole other world. I do like it. A different kind of stress. The best part is really getting to know your pt.'s. I do miss the adrenaline rush at times...but I am staying at the hospital prn, so I won't be giving it up entirely. HH you have to know a little about everything. Good-luck. me know how it goes!!!

Usually our patients go to the MD's office for outpt chemo, but we have a few that are on 5fU for 4-5 days and we have an IV company that sets it up and initiates it, and we monitor the pt/pump and d/c the infusion and deaccess the port when it's completed
