Do you get used to the nasty messes?

I've been lurking around the site for awhile and I've read tons of posts from CNAs. I was just wondering, do you guys get used to cleaning up people? Or is it something that still gets to you? I have a 2 year old brother and change his diaper from time to time, but idk if it can compare to changing grown people diapers. Anyone have any horror stories?

Definitely be excited. Sure, the messes are yucky and no one particularly LIKES cleaning poop, but despite that, it's a really cool job sometimes.

You get to go home knowing that someone is more comfortable and well taken care of because you were there, and you get to know people on an intimate level that most people never get the chance to. I don't mean that in a creepy way, it's just really neat to work so close to a state of the human condition that most people don't experience much - old age, sickness, death. In an LTC setting, you will get so close to your residents, it can be super rewarding if you don't dwell on the negatives :).

I just roll with the flow (excuse the pun)...:p

Definitely excited about everything. Becoming a CNA is required in order to enroll in the ABSN program here. However, I'm glad to take the course because working in health care is completely new to me. I have had one of my friends say that they don't think I should do it, and couple of others that say I should go for it!

You never know how something will suit you until you try! I actually took my CNA class as a last resort after I was having trouble finding a job and a free course was offered. I figured I'd hate it, but it'd pay the bills until I found something. I was surprised to find that I actually really love working in healthcare, even more so now that I'm working in peds. It's definitely worth a shot. :)

You are sooooo right. You never know until you try! I'm kinda in the same position that you were in. I love that everyone on here so far is so encouraging yet honest about the trials and tribulations of going this route. I wish everyone here the best and thanks. :)
