Specializes in L & D; Postpartum.
those poor birth center nurses.....that would be like trying to float me (a psych nurse) to a med-surg floor....I wouldn't do it !!!!!

We can't refuse to go. What we can and should do is tell them we won't take an assignment that jeopardizes our licenses; i.e., doing treatments, meds, diagnoses etc., that we are not qualified to care for. And except for GYN surgeries that is most of them. They don't like that; believe me. But they can't really do anything about it. But we are losing nurses in our Birth Center because they are abusing the floating thing.

Specializes in long term care...for now :).

We never do. We have had one CNA for 40 residents before. We have a least two per hall, which doesnt help much either, with sit-to-stand and vanderlifts where you need two people. In our memory care unit the two CNAs will be putting someone to bed, and without a nurse out in the main lobby the residents wander by themselves! Im only an RCA at the moment, so I really cant do much by law, but I like to sit with them and make sure no one gets hurt! It scares me. I wish the staffing people could come during the evening and night shifts to see how we are not fully staffed and not able to offer the best care for our residents. It would change their mind for sure. Right now we just do the best we can because that is all we are capable of. :redbeathe:heartbeat

Oh my God! What state allows this? Seven pts per nurse?

Specializes in telemetry, med-surg, home health, psych.

I would give anything to have a 1:7 ratio....on my detox unit we usually have from 25-42 pts. with 2 RN's and med nurses....a lot of med. problems with detoxing: seizures, B/P's skyrocketing, diabetic problems, etc.....I never feel safe when I am on that unit...med nurses give meds only and take off Dr. orders. We two RN's handle everything else from new admits, charting on all, attending tx. plan meetings, consults to MD, making sure all are seen by psychiatrist q. day...etc...it is overwhelming at times.....
