Do you envy 1:1 sitters?

Published

I enjoy being a nurse but on some nights I am totally envious of the nursing assistants assigned to be sitters. I see them reading their books, magazines, surfing the web.

I don't know what the process is but I would love to come in and work as a 1:1 sitter one of these days.

I wonder if it would seem weird and if staffing would even accept me since I am a RN.

I tried one on one private duty. Boring, is not for me. Im a mover and a doer.

I've sat as an RN, they just don't like it cause we are more expensive. But if you're all they have. . . Not all sitting assignments are easy, especially for the confused/aggitated patients. And nights are boring if the pt's sleeping. I'd rather not.

I agree. I am an LNA and I absolutely dread being stuck in a one to one. When the patients are confused they don't understand that they need to stay in their room and taht they can not wander into other patients room's etc, etc. What compounds this more is when they are a fall risk. You are constantly up and down with them. They sometimes get agitated with all of this not letting them get up on their own. Some of them become violent/ verbally abusive.

If you ring for the RN to come in the room becuase the patient is restless and agitated she will say how come you can't get hom to sit down, etc, etc,, that is why you are here to prevent the patient from getting up. The nurse does not know what it is like to stay in a room with these confused and agitated at times patients for 8 hrs plus unless they have been an aide before. Eventually the nurse ends up giving them Ativan or even Haldol but it is always by the time the patient is well aggravated of a danger to staff or themselves. One patient had to be put in restraints in order to give him his Haldol. I don't know wht some RNS wait this long when they end up giving the meds anyways.

I am not picking on RNs by any means. There are just that 1 or 2 that always wait. I am not totally ignorant to the affects of Haldol or Ativan, especially on the elderly because I am a nursing student. Just Venting.
