I am an RN with an Associate Degree in Nursing and am thinking about moving to Chicago in the fall. I've been looking at job openings and it seems like most of the hospitals prefer BSN grads. Do Chicago hospitals (Loyola, UofC, etc) hire RNs with an Associate Degree in Nursing? I'm curious. Thanks!

I just got a job at Children's Memorial in Lincoln Park and I have an ASN.

My friend worked for Delnor near Chicago and she had an ADN.

Quick question, you said you just got a job at Childrens Memorial. Were you a new grad? I graduate in December 2009 and was looking into applying for their new grad programs? Just wondering how competitive it was? and how good the program was?

MZjones,

May I ask you what school you graduated from? I want to work at Childrens memorial so bad. Do you have any good advice? Should I try to get a pct or cna job at a hospital in the peds dept if I can? Thanks!

Nah, they just say 'BSN preferred', but most hospitals are hiring ADNs too, especially if you have experience!

I have been waiting for almost a month to find out if CMH is going to hire me for their new graduate program!! I have an ADN and it doesn't seem like that mattered to them at all. It's driving me crazy! I've met with both the day and night floor managers for second interviews and I don't know what's taking so long. I'm a volunteer there and I love it. They've been very nice and positive, but the fact that I've been waiting so long is worrying me and stressing me out. This would be the BEST place to start my nursing career! I'm just stressing right now and I need to vent. Does anyone out there work for Children's? Is it normal for the hiring process to take so long? Do you love your job? :redpinkhe

CLC 172,

I just got hired at Children's for the SNA program, and they got back to me within one week. I'm not sure if it is different for the new grad program, but I know that they do like people who volunteer there. I have been doing the same thing for over a year now, and my friend was volunteer there and got hired on. Don't get discouraged. I know HR said regardless, they will let you know. Either a phone or a letter. Good luck!

As far as I know Rush and U of C are the only hospitals that really push that BSN only jibberjabber. At most hospitals youre all good with an ASN, BSN will help though.
