Do you always state that you are a nurse?

Curious....

If you accompany a family or friend for any kind of treatment do you state that you are a nurse? How about if you are getting treated?

I usually don't reveal that I am a nurse, unless specifically asked. And if I want to keep that to myself, I can always reply " I am a teacher" since I teach nursing. If they ask where I work, I have to say at a university and then I'm outed.

My mom, however, always discloses that she has a daughter who is a nurse and has a doctorate and teaches. And when I came to stay at her bedside following her heart surgery, there was an orange sticker on her chart stating that "Daughter is a Nurse". Like it was some kind of warning! Beware! haha But, I know mom is proud of me, so I just chuckle to myself.

When I was still a student, my mother was bragging on my in the ER one time after I had had a grand mal seizure and i was post icta and very out of it. I guess I was a hell of a patient in my foggy state. After my mother outed me, my nurse replied not so nicely (or so I was told) "For wanting to be a nurse you are not a very good patient"! How terrible! I was post-ictal! I won't say anything again!

Funny story. I was also out one night and met a guy, who asked me what I do. I replied that I was an RN. "A CCU nurse?" I replied, in fact, that I was. He started quizzing me "Your pt going into VT, symptomatic.. blah blah blah...What do you do?" Turns out he was a cardiologist. Not my cup of tea when I'm trying to have a good time. I laughed though. Next time I should say I work at Walmart or something.

NOOOO way! But I do ask a lot of questions about things so it kinda gives it away.
